Our story begins a little over four years ago in Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, where Alex was conducting his evening social rounds, a tradition he took almost as seriously as patient care. On this particular night, fate (and the scheduling gods) placed Alexa on a rare night shift. As Alex’s social rounds became increasingly strategic, he finally worked up the courage to give Alexa his number on a Post-it note, hoping she would text him. Alexa, of course, knew the cardinal rule: dating coworkers can be messy. So, she hesitated. But eventually, after weighing the risks and consulting no fewer than three friends she agreed to go on a date. We still debate what our first date was. We initially planned to go to Pelicans Nest for lunch after one of Alex’s best friends’ wedding. The night before the wedding, we ended up working a shift together, and by the end of it, Alex had successfully convinced Alexa to go out to breakfast after work. Although we may not agree on what the true first date was, we can agree there was instant chemistry. From there, the relationship took off, and our story truly began. Just a few months in, Alexa asked Alex if he’d like to join her on a trip to visit one of her best friends in San Diego. What we thought would be a simple getaway turned into the realization that we share a genuine love for traveling, whether it’s just the two of us or with friends and family. Through all the trips and all that life has brought us over the last four years, we realized there’s no one else we’d rather take on life’s adventures with than each other.
