You might already know this origin story, but for those who don't, Scott was Alex's high school Spanish teacher in 2005 (I know - gasp!). Alex was a junior in high school, and Scott had just graduated from Northwest Missouri State University. Scott accepted his first teaching job at Raytown South High School, and Alex's name appeared on his Spanish III roster.
We wish there were more interesting details to this chapter, but Alex had a different Spanish teacher her senior year. She then graduated and went on to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). One day in 2011, Scott was researching graduate programs. He clicked on UMKC's website and saw Alex's picture on the homepage. Scott wondered how his former student was doing and decided to send her a message. The two met for lunch, but not long after, Alex moved to New York City for graduate school. Scott visited Alex in NY in 2012, and the two spent the day exploring Prospect Park, eating Shake Shack burgers, and walking beneath the lights of Times Square. Scott would soon leave Kansas City for Navy Officer Candidate School and graduate classes in Spain. On both of these adventures, he sent Alex hand-written letters stating how much he loved hearing from her. Alex was curious and wrote him back.
Scott never quit sending Alex messages. Despite significant hesitation on her part, Alex agreed to go on a date with him when she was home for Thanksgiving in 2017. It took another year for Scott's persistent efforts to pay off. On New Year's Day 2019, Alex and Scott decided to date long distance. Scott visited NYC five times that year to make sure Alex didn't get away, and on June 13, 2019 he proposed. Looking back, Scott and Alex can see how God was bringing their stories together in a unique and beautiful way. They are excited to celebrate their marriage and hope to have you with them for the big day!
