How we met

08.23.2017

We met on August 23rd, 2017. I (Wendy), an infamous goodie-two-shoes and only 19-years-old at the time, was somehow convinced by a friend to go to one of the most iconic (and...rustic) bars in Laramie. We snuck in early before the security arrived. After a few hours, Alex's bartending shift started and the bouncers arrived at the doors. Assuming that our ID's were checked already, Alex offered to make us some drinks. After making a few of my first ever vodka cranberries and exchanging some flirty conversation -between rounds of karaoke- I was feeling bold on this very out-of-character evening. I turned to my friend giggling as I wrote my number down on the receipt before handing it to Alex. After a few more hours of flirting, my friend and I moved on for the evening, only to see my phone light up with a text from Alex not 2-minutes after we left. The next day, he invited me over to his place to make me dinner...which turned out to be poisoned with gluten, because I was too afraid to seem high-maitenance by telling him my dietary restrictions (it’s the thought that counts, right?). Despite this, it was a fun evening, though I was still determined to not become attached to Alex at this point--that worked out well didn't it? He just seemed too good to be true, and I wasn't about to let some smooth-talking college boy derail my plans to go to New Zealand for a semester only a few months later.

Our Story

Support from afar

In the end, we didn't have to give up on each other or our goals...Alex had other plans for us: After only 4-months of dating and living in Laramie, we began what would become about three years of long distance spanning Colorado, Wyoming, New Zealand, Texas, and North Dakota. It wasn't easy at times, but it's what it took for both of us to pursue our goals as individuals, supporting each other from afar the whole way there.

The Proposal

02.13.2021

In December 2020, Wendy was finally back in Colorado, and we decided we were better together. I (Alex) popped the question on February 13th, 2021. I woke up that morning knowing only two facts: I would be asking Wendy to marry me that afternoon, and the high temperature was going to be 0°F with a chance of snow. Despite the frigid winter conditions...the show must go on! I kept in touch with Erin throughout the day to ensure Wendy was preoccupied with their manicure date and photoshoot on Lookout Mountain that evening. I texted Erin at 4PM that I arrived near the site where I'd propose, and to let me know when they'd be parking atop the mountain. She let me know they were there, but I received that message late due to poor cell reception!!! Quick on my feet, I sprang into action and scurried down the trail hoping to remain discrete. Mistaken for an eccentric stranger, I called out for Wendy and her undivided attention because I had something to say... "Wendy, we've weathered through many storms together (including this one!), and I love you because we continue to grow stronger together. I can't imagine living the life I dream of without you by my side. Wendy, will you please marry me?" Thankfully before I froze, she emphatically said YES!!! And we embraced with the love and warmth necessary to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
