Question

How soon should I book my flights?

Answer

ASAP. Every Colombian on the face of the planet is flying home every summer. It's more expensive to fly to Colombia than Paris, if you wait. So PLEASE book as soon as you've got your dates figured out.

Question

What's the weather in Colombia?

Answer

You're in for a real treat! Despite being close to the equator, most of Colombia is in Spring year round. Why? Because of the high elevation. Thanks, Andes Mountains! Please expect highs in the 80s F and lows in 60s at night. The elevation is 5000 ft and we will be visiting areas that reach up to 6500 ft. Think Denver type of elevation.

Question

Do I need to rent a car?

Answer

We highly dissuade you from renting a car. If you've watched movies, it's like driving in India. Cabs and Ubers are readily available. Depending on your incoming flight, we will provide transportation to/from from the airport. If you decide to rent a car, please know default rentals are manual transmission cars and you will be driving through some mountainous areas.

Question

Do I need a passport?

Answer

YES. Please get or renew your passport ASAP. You will not be able to fly if your passport expires within 6 months of wedding date. So if your passport expires anywhere from July to February 2024, you will not be allowed to fly.

Question

Is Colombia safe?

Answer

Alex tends to laugh at this question because let's just say school or mass shootings aren't a thing in Colombia so it depends what your definition of 'safe' is. On the other hand, we can't deny the bloody history of Colombia so here's the straight answer- you'll be safer than you've ever been. Quindio, the region where guests are flying into is historically known as one of the safest regions in the country. There's no drug trafficking or shady business happening in the area- that all happens around narco-trafficking routes near seaports. And as I always tell my American friends, the last thing a petty thief wants is the US embassy and the CIA getting involved, so attacking a foreigner is a bigger liability for them than you think. Did it happen back in the 80s, yes! But luckily, it's 2022 and we're way past that time period. About 15 years ago there was an ad in the NYT that said 'Colombia, the only danger is not wanting to leave', and indeed, you'll probably consider moving there too!

Question

Do I need any shots? Yellow fever?

Answer

It depends! For the most part you'll be fine with the vaccines you received as a child, but here's what the CDC and WHO say - The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Colombia: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza. You do not need the yellow fever vaccine since we'll be in high elevation and far from the Amazon.
