Clayton and Alex met the first semester that Clayton attended Oklahoma State University, Fall of 2018. Alex and Clayton were sitting at the same table at the library on campus and Alex asked the whole table who they were and where they were from. Clayton was amongst a group of about 8 Amarillo natives, all of which individually stated that they were from Amarillo. This caused a good laugh amongst the group. They continued to get to know each other as friends, going to school, church, and homework hang-outs with friends every week. Eventually, Clayton began inching out of the friend zone.
Near the end of the Fall 2018 semester, Clayton decided to muster up the courage to ask Alex to his Fall BYX formal. Alex wasn't sure if she wanted to make that "next step" and she ended up waiting too long to give him an answer. Clayton ended up scheduling a test at 8pm and when Alex decided she would join him, the plans fell through. However, they decided to still make a night of it and go on a late Fuzzy's date. Fun Fact: One of Alex's bridesmaids, Kirsten (and her now husband), were also at Fuzzy's that same night!
Throughout their time in Stillwater, Clayton and Alex made so many memories. They went to endless sports games (go pokes forever!), played in every intramural sport they could, watched lots of tv, and of course, played lots of games. They quickly realized how effortlessly they fit into each other's lives. They both continued to grow together and through school, earning a few degrees between the two of them and then decided to make their next step together and move to Dallas, where Alex is from & where Clayton was very familiar with through soccer growing up.
After moving to Dallas and making a home with friends, family, and other support, Clayton began getting sick. Clayton dealt with unexplained symptoms and struggled health-wise for months until in August of 2024 they finally figured out what was wrong - his kidneys were failing. Immediately, Clayton and Alex were thrown into medical challenges, nightly dialysis, doctors appointments, and knowing they were preparing for a kidney transplant. Alex began testing to see if she was a match for a live kidney donation as soon as she could. In November, Clayton proposed to Alex at the Dallas Arboretum, where he planned to have a couple of her friends there in disguise to take photos as well as have friends host an engagement party for them to come back to. It was the perfect day!! December of 2024, she got the news that she was a match to donate to Clayton. Surgery was scheduled and on March 24th, 2025 Alex gave her kidney to Clayton. Really giving the phrase "In sickness and in health" a run for its money!
