Cultural Traditions

Our ceremony and reception will be a blend of Black American and Mexican cultural traditions; we're honored to celebrate our heritage and encourage our family and friends to learn more about what to expect

Las Arras Matrimoniales

Wedding Coins

Ritual: The couple exchange 13 coins as a commitment to partnership in prosperity and financial trust. Symbolism: 12 coins represent the months of the year, and the 13th coin is a promise to be charitable.

Mancuerna

Wedding Lasso

Ritual: A rosary or decorative rope is placed over the shoulders of the couple to represent their new, shared life. Symbolism: Represents a strong, unbreakable union before God.

Jumping the Broom

El Salto de Escoba

Ritual: A decorative broom is placed at the couples feet and they’ll join hands and cross over together. Symbolism: Act of sweeping away the past and leaping into a clean, shared future.

El Baile del Billete

Dollar Dance

Guests pin money onto the bride and groom’s clothing while dancing with them. Shares community support, financial prosperity and a chance to share a special moment with the newlyweds.

La Vibora de la Mar

Sea Snake Dance

Guests will link arms to form a “snake” and pass under an arch created by the couple, who stand on chairs. It symbolizes the challenges of marriage (as the “snake” tries to knock them down) and the couple’s resilience as they try to remain standing.
