It is called the walled city (ciudad amurallada) because of the walls built by the Spaniards between the 16th and 18th centuries to defend the city from pirate attacks. The best way to explore the walled city is to walk around on foot. You can visit the Adolfo Mejia Theater, the Bolivar Park, Santo Domingo Church, Naval Museum, and the Clock Tower Square just to name a few.
A trendy neighborhood just on the other side of the harbor from the walled city. If Brooklyn or Wynwood are your vibe, then definitely spend some time exploring Getsemani. Filled with street art, vendors, and cafes.
Built in 1657, this fortress built by the Spaniards overlooks the city of Cartagena.
