The Gilberts moved to Colorado while Alani was in middle school, and she and Josh met at church. Josh admits that part of the reason he spent time with her twin, Ryan, was to be around her more. Alani always thought that Josh was really awkward and being almost a year younger than her put her off for a while...... Luckily she got over that and Josh matured a bit!

During his senior year of college (Spring 2020), Josh decided to reach out to Alani again after going on a few dates the summer before to see if she was interested in trying again. She was! But unfortunately for him, Alani was in Hawaii with her grandmother for the next few months. Alani sneakily suggested that Hawaii would be more fun with Josh there, and Josh fell for the trap, thinking it was his idea to visit her! He booked a flight and the rest is history :)
