In the Orthodox tradition, the wedding ceremony is actually composed of two services. The first is the Service of Betrothal, or Engagement ceremony, during which the rings are exchanged. The second, the Service of Crowning, is longer and includes several prayers offered on behalf of the couple. During this portion of the ceremony, the crowns of marriage are placed on the couple's heads, the common cup is shared, and a joyous procession takes place around the table on which are the Gospel and Cross.
An Orthodox wedding ceremony takes between 45-60 minutes.
The Orthodox Sacrament of Marriage can only be performed within the sacred space of an Orthodox church where proper attire is required. So, think, "Sunday best" or better. No jeans, please, and avoid low cut necklines. Women's shoulders should remain covered while in the church.
