Sonoma County is home to some of the best wine appellations in the world. Unlike some of its neighboring regions, the Sonoma area has a diverse geography that has given rise to 18 different AVAs, each benefitting from its unique microclimate. You can choose areas to visit based on what kind of wines you already love (big Zins, crisp whites, classic California Pinots) or you can take a few recommendations and go explore! Some family (Desmond and Harkins) favorites are Porter Creek, Matrix, and Thomas George Estates in the Russian River Valley, and Stuhlmuller and Robert Young Estate in Alexander Valley.
Sonoma County has some incredible (and famous!) breweries that are worth a visit - Lagunitas in Petaluma and Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa or Windsor are two at the top of the list. Some of our other favorites include Henhouse Brewing, Fogbelt, and Moonlight Brewing. They all feature classic West Coast IPAs, but there's always something exciting to try - whether it's a juicy IPA in the East Coast style, or a crisp pilsner, or interesting sour. Take a tour, or hit the tasting room, but remember to drive safe!
Head out to the coast for some questionably good weather but always great views. Beaches further south, like Stinson, are popular for sunbathing and picnics, but Bailey's favorite beach is out at Dillon. Stop in Tomales on the way for a sandwich or a pastry, and enjoy a long walk on the beach. There are plenty of options in both Marin and Sonoma counties, both public and private. Make sure to check the weather and bring a jacket before you head out.
The Russian River boasts great beaches, bars, and plenty of fun activities. Check out Mother's Beach in Forestville (called Frog Beach in Bailey's family), or the more popular Johnson's Beach in Guerneville. Bring a cooler, the paper, and some water shoes, and enjoy an easy morning in the sun working on crosswords. While you're out there, swing by Rio Nido Roadhouse for a Scrimshaw pilsner and a burger, or scope out a new pop-up restaurant in Guerneville.
