How We Met

4.7.16

In March 2016 I moved from Utah to Southern California seeking a new start in life. I started working out at 24 Hour Fitness in Costa Mesa, CA to get back into shape and was enjoying the nice weather and living by the beach. My gym suddenly was shut down for renovations and we were guided to the 24 Hour Fitness down the street at Triangle Square. On April 7th, 2016 I went in for the first time to try the new location. That was the first time I ever saw Alaina. She was behind the desk and had a name badge on that said she was a personal trainer. Before long I had signed up for a few months worth of personal training with her and wanted to get to know her more. Over the next few months I invited her to play racquetball there at the gym after her shift a few times. She did once and we had fun. Then we started to become friends. I also invited her to a few more things outside of the gym but she was usually too busy with the many jobs she had at the time. She also had the idea of keeping it a professional relationship while she was still my trainer, so that didn't give a real date a chance. Once the training sessions were over she finally agreed to a date. We went to see a movie at Triangle Square, and got drinks afterwards. We had a great time. Finally the ice had been broken. Just then, I received a lucrative job offer back in Utah and I decided to take it. I had been pursuing a relationship with her for month but hadn’t gotten very far up to that point. Now I would have to tell her I was moving. So I decided to make sure and tell her in plain English before I moved that I liked her and would continue to pursue her from Utah. That conversation happened at the Main Street Wine Co in Huntington Beach (where I would propose just 2.5 years later). It wasn't until that night that she ever even hinted how she felt, and turns out she liked me back! We spent as much time as possible over the next 2 weeks until I moved. From there our relationship blossomed quickly. -Courtney

Making Moves

**Dating**

After a few months of dating long distance, both Courtney and I felt like our relationship only had a chance to really progress if we at least lived in the same city. I knew that Courtney moved for his job and needed to be in Utah, but that I could truly train from anywhere. I was also right at the beginning of starting my own business out there. I realized I needed to make a choice, plant roots in Southern California, away from this amazing guy, or give this relationship a real chance. And so I moved! <3 And boy am I glad I did! Soon after moving out, Courtney had bought a house. In Utah is where I first began working with Orangetheory Fitness. But we were only there for about 6 months when Courtney had taken a different job that required a move to Kansas City for what was supposed to be a 3 month assignment. We decided that rather than having Courtney leave while I stayed in Utah, that we would just move together and rent out our house. After what turned into 6 months in Kansas City we decided we weren’t going to wait around to be transferred any longer. We decided that we’d had enough of the cold weather states and wanted to head back to California. I reached out to Orangetheory Owners in San Jose, CA (my home town) and Courtney decided to quit his job and start his own company: Fire Alert. The past year and half in San Jose have simply flown by! We love it here and its so fun that Courtney can get to know the city where I grew up. We are also just a short drive from my parents house, which is the same house I grew up in. - Alaina

The Proposal

9.21.18

Courtney is always so thoughtful and typically great at being sentimental, but for our 2 year anniversary he didn't do much. We were on a family camping trip so made sense that he didn't want to make a big deal (UNLIKE myself, Courtney does not enjoy the spotlight) But on that note, it was normal for him to want to make a big deal. When we got back from the trip he would go on and on about how we should plan a trip to visit Huntington Beach, where we first fell in love. We both love it down there and it was safe to say that I needed a vacation, but work was keeping be very busy. There were a few weekends he attempted to plan the trip but I kept volunteering to run things on weekends that he wanted to go. Eventually, he worked out a way of contacting other managers to get people to help make sure I could actually get a weekend off to go on this trip. He made it so special! Almost too special... it was safe to say I was suspicious, but I honestly had no idea. We ate breakfast at one of our favorite breakfast places across the street from my old house in Newport. Then we had a fun casual day at the beach, like we typically would if we lived there. But that night he had made reservations at the Main Street Wine Co. for dinner. Last time we had been there was that conversation that launched our relationship form a friendship into a romance, so having our anniversary dinner there was just perfect. We ordered just as we had that first time there, and when the server brought out or drinks, there was a little black box. Courtney grabbed it and got down on one knee..... and I said YES!!!! It was so magical! Just as he stood up hundreds of balloons were cascading down from the ceiling! Then my family ran in! It was so special having them there to celebrate with us. Also, Courtney's brother Jarin joined us with his guitar. It was like a scene from a movie, sitting there with my now fiance, listening to the beautiful love songs that Jarin had prepared. - Alaina
