They met officially at a classmate's Super Bowl party and didn't think much of it. Then on April 1st, 2017 - he was headed out to see a friend, she was home in her pajamas - they decided to cancel whatever plans they both already had to explore the city of Chicago together. They went bar hopping and had a late night snack at Sam's Chicken and Ribs in Edgewater. The next day, they had their first date - they snuck Taco Bell into a movie theatre to see Beauty and the Beast. They were pleasantly surprised when they realized that Sandy's internship and Akira's first ship as a commissioned Naval Officer were in the same state - Virginia. So, on Best Friends Day - June 8th, 2017 - they traveled there together. Their relationship continued to develop throughout the summer of 2017 and they both realized that "This could be something". Sandy's internship ended and she got a job in Chicago. Akira went on several deployments. They made it work through hours of video chat, letters, and emails. Then in 2020, just as Akira was leaving Virginia for his deployment to Bahrain...Sandy got a job in Virginia. What timing! Although the deployment added two years of long distance to their relationship, it only made their relationship and communication stronger (and also gave Sandy the excuse to visit a new country). On October 8th, 2021, Akira proposed to Sandy in the parking lot of Dulles International Airport. Then proceeded to immediately board a plane back to Bahrain...and took the ring with him (only to make some minor modifications!). So, with no ring and no man, Sandy went home...alone. But it's okay! Akira made his return to the United States in June, 2022. Since then, they have been inseparable. They chose to marry on June 8th, 2024 because not only are they partners, but they are also best friends, and if you recall, June 8th is Best Friends Day! ——— We want to thank everyone for their love and support throughout the years.
