How We Met

On a Bus

On a bus--what? really? Really. Catherine and Adam met on the route 16 bus in Santa Cruz at 8am. Catherine was in her last quarter in college, majoring in History of Art and Visual Culture. Adam was in his third year majoring in Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing. Catherine often spent her mornings on the bus writing in her journal enjoying the brisk breeze through the cracked window. Adam, who had long moppish hair, wore sunglasses even on the cloudy days and rode the bus listening to music hoping no one would talk to him. Although, mornings that Catherine and Adam made eye contact often lead to days a bit more exhilerating. One day on a relatively empty bus, Adam sat down right next to Catherine. She was writing, but to Adam's surprise she did not seem perturbed by his presence. After all, he could have sat any where. After she finished writing, Adam asked, "So, are you a writer?" "No, not really." "Are you a poet?" "No." And somehow from that start they developed a relationship. They talked for three weeks on the bus, getting to know each other as acquaitances. Eventually Adam worked up the courage to ask her out on their first date. Catherine bravely ventured to a BBQ with all of Adam's friends. Catherine graduated that spring, and the following summer they continued to adventure to San Francisco where they visited museums, book stores, and went hiking. They got to know each other over cups of hot chocolate and long walks along West Cliff. Since those early days, they have moved to Canada and back. Catherine earned a Master's in Social Justice Education. Adam has published a couple of short stories. They live in San Diego and like to spend their time with their families, cats, and the outdoors. They can't wait to be amongst everyone they know and love.
