A Guide to the Wedding Ceremony

Answer

Attending an Orthodox Christian wedding is a unique experience filled with ancient rituals and spiritual significance. Here’s a concise guide to help you understand and appreciate the ceremony. Dress Code- Please dress respectfully. We ask that our guests abide by the dress code of 'Sunday Best'. Punctuality: Arrive 15-30 minutes early to find seating and settle in. Greeting: Greet others quietly and respectfully Standing and Sitting: Follow the lead of other guests. Crossing Yourself: Optional if you feel comfortable. Respect Sacred Spaces: Do not enter the altar area. Photography: Follow the couple's rules. Gifts: Typically given at the reception. The Rings- The rings are exchanged and is first part of the service referred to as the Rite of Betrothal. This is a sign of commitment and devotion to one another. The Ceremony: The Crowns- The crowning of the couple signifies the great amount of sacrifice and humility in marriage. It also represents that the bride and groom become as a king and queen in their own small kingdom, which is an integral part of the Kingdom of God. The Common Cup- The sharing of a common cup of wine signifies that in marriage all things are shared equally. The Walk of Isaiah- The procession around the sacramental table takes place at the end of the marriage ceremony as the choir chants the "Dance of Isaiah." The priest leads the couple around the table three times as they take their first steps as husband and Wife. An Orthodox Christian wedding is a profound and beautiful event steeped in tradition. By following these guidelines and embracing the cultural and spiritual richness of the ceremony, you'll be able to fully appreciate and respect the sacredness of the occasion. We hope you enjoy the experience!
