We used this agency to organize private tours of Cairo’s less trodden areas. You’ll get a great sense of the history of the city, with convenient transportation and a friendly well spoken tour guide. You can reach out to info@walklikeanegyptian.com to find more information about the available tours and your dates of interest. We recommend that you reach out a few weeks in advance so they can accommodate the dates you prefer. They can offer to pick you up and drop you off, which we recommend you take advantage of. They can do large groups and will make food and shopping stops for souvenirs along the way. We recommend tours of El-Moez Street, Garbage City, islamic and coptic areas of Cairo, and once you check their proposed guides, you can talk to them about setting up a combination of the sites you are interested and they’ll tell you if it is feasible.
This would be great on a nice warm morning! Bring hats and lots of sunscreen and cash (Egyptian Pounds). There are vendors there that offer different rides, from camels to horses and carriages, which can help you get around the big area quickly. Otherwise, feel free to enjoy the place on foot if it’s not an excessively warm day for you. Feel free to reach out to us with more questions if you’re curious about how to plan a trip to the pyramids!
This old museum has a huge collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, and a beautiful golded collection from Tutankhamun‘s tomb. You can show up to the museum, and there will be guides at the gate often regulated by the security officers there. You can negotiate with them on the price of their services, and you can pay them in Egyptian cash, so make sure to bring some. You’ll get the most out of the museum if you have a guide (ask Walk Like An Egyptian tour agency if they can set something up for you), because there isn't much information on the items on display to read inside, however it’s also fun to just walk around and look at what’s available if you prefer to be by yourself. Either way, if you’re in Cairo, you should definitely visit this museum.
This wonderful museum, located just by Coptic Cairo’s oldest churches, has a wonderful collection of cultural exhibitions, starting from pre-history all the way to modern Egypt. You can make your way to this museum alone, or with a tour guide (from walk like an Egyptian). It also has a large collection of mummies, well preserved and in great condition, which we would say is the highlight of the museum.
An old marketplace in the heart of Old Cairo, right next to El-Moez Street. It’s a wonderful place to find souvenirs and well-crafted items such as brass lamps, and lanterns, and some leather goods. You can also enjoy the unique vibe of the market by sitting for some warm drinks at one of the oldest cafes in Cairo (its name is Al-fishawy and it’s in the heart of the market) and another in-door option is the Naguib Mahfouz Restaurant for quick snacks or a meal.
Discover Cairo through its unique food with one of these tours! This agency offers tours of two areas in Cairo, Downtown Cairo, and Heliopolis. Both have different gems of street food and authentic restaurants that are definitely worth a try. You must have Fuul, Molokheya, Hammam (stuffed pigeon), Mashi, and all the desserts - just ask Katie.
Gazef is an experienced travel agency that has can help you experience more remote adventures around the country, from seaside locations by the red sea to desert oases.
A two-hour drive from Cairo, Fayoum has a lot to offer from unique pottery and crafts in Tunis Village to desert safari’s and visiting one of the world’s UNESCO heritage sites Wady Al-Hitan. There's a great restaurant that we went to right after getting married - Ibis Restaurant and Cooking School. Plan to stay for the evening because the views are incredible.
This is a lot of fun and there are a lot of boat companies along the Nile. We might organize a ride the night before the wedding though so stay tuned.
