Mrs. Tsen will also be one of the Padrinos de Lazo. The lazo is a silken cord or loop of rosary beads that is placed in a figure eight shape around the shoulders of the couple as they exchange their vows. The lazo acts as a symbol of unity and commitment, and represents the love that should bind the couple together everyday as they equally share the responsibility of marriage for the rest of their lives.
Father of the Bride
Dr. Tsen will also be one of the Padrinos de Lazo (Knot) with his wife, Mrs. Tsen.
Mother of the Groom
Mrs. Van Norman will also be the Madrina de Arras (Coins). The madrina de arras presents the 13 coins that the groom gives to the bride. The coins, or arrhea, was a Roman custom of breaking gold or silver, one half to be kept by the woman and the other half by the man, as a pledge to marriage. The number 13 represents Jesus Christ and his 12 apostles. After the gold coins re blessed by the priest, the groom gives the bride these coins, often presented in an ornate box, as symbol of his unquestionable trust and confidence. Acceptance by the bride means taking that trust and confidence unconditionally with total dedication and prudence. The coins also represent the sharing of finances, and they become a family heirloom.
