When Matt's niece and nephew want a story, they go to Aunt Adi; when they want to "do some trouble," they go to Uncle Matt. As the storyteller, it's only fitting that Adison write our love story, so be warned - you're getting her version of events. Matt may or may not approve this message.
Ahhh, the riverlot. Both of us consider the night we spent at Shaun's riverlot - just the two of us and Shaun - to be one of the first nights we thought there might be something between us. Essentially, our relationship was built on a strong foundation of beer, booze, and pretzels (and staying up all night talking).
Fast forward another year and a couple of months, and I was a freshman at Penn State UP and Matt was a sophomore at Penn State Altoona. I was living large in a one-room dorm in Sproul Hall, but there was one problem: spaghetti is my favorite food, and I couldn't cook spaghetti in my dorm room. One day, Matt drove from Altoona to State College and brought me a surprise: a Tupperware full of spaghetti. I knew then and there he was the one. (Just kidding, sorta. To me, this was a very romantic gesture.)
The rest of our college years blur together when I look back on them. Highlights? (I did consult Matt to compile this list, mainly because we feel old and neither of us could think of many specific moments.) -The many, many football games and tailgates -Dancing together in THON 2015 -The infamous McFlurry incident (if you haven't heard this story, ask me) -Becoming Matt, Breen, and Brett's unofficial fourth roommate
In 2015, Matt stepped into a giant nut-shaped vehicle and embarked on an adventure across the continental United States. Meanwhile, I was living with three of my favorite people, slaving away over my honors thesis, and playing games of True American. One year later, Matt was ready to say "Cashew later!" to the Nut and Wien and return to good ole PA... But I was about to embark on my own adventure. We spent four wonderful months together after a year apart, and then Matt drove to BWI with my dad and sister to see me off as I boarded a plane bound for Ecuador. These two years weren't the easiest, but being apart made the time we spent together that much more special. I loved getting to roadtrip from Seattle, Washington, to Red Bluff, California, in the NUTMobile (despite the Chipotle incident), and we both look back on our week in Ecuador fondly, especially since we've been stuck inside for so much of the past year and a half. (Thanks, COVID.)
Following our two years of travel, we were thrilled to be back in the same country, let alone the same state. Even though Matt was living in Harrisburg and I was back in State College for grad school, we got to see each other much more often. I also fell in love with places in Harrisburg when I spent weekends with Matt: the Millworks, the Broad Street Market, and, of course, the Midtown Scholar Bookstore.
In May 2019, I finally finished school (for the time being) and said my goodbyes to Happy Valley. After briefly sharing Matt's studio apartment while I hunted for jobs in the Harrisburg area (space was tight for a while there), we bought our first house together in July 2019. We closed on the house on a Friday, and in true Matt-and-Adison fashion, we headed to Williamsport that night since we had tickets to the Selinsgrove Hops, Vines, and Wines festival the next afternoon. We didn't officially move into our house until a week later. I know this is my version of events, but I think I can safely speak for both of us when I say that we couldn't be happier with this house that we've made our home. I am also endlessly grateful for the fact that Matt does most of the dishes (the grossest chore ever - he's definitely a keeper).
So, 2020 wasn't all bad... Matt proposed during our annual beach vacation. We took a walk on the beach after dinner, I asked Matt to take pictures of me in my ~super stylish~ new jean jacket, and he instructed me to face the ocean, then spin around and make a funny face at him. I did, and I only wish Matt actually snapped the picture - I am confident I was making an exceptionally ugly face, and I can only imagine how it changed when I saw that he was down on one knee. A highlight of our engagement? Ending our walk by dancing up the ramp to the beach house to "No Hands" by Waka Flocka Flame. We'll happily reenact this moment at our wedding.
2021 was off to a rocky start when Matt and I both got COVID. But it quickly turned around when, on our first day out of quarantine, we met our future puppy. Two days later, we brought Tucker home. Our lives filled with sleepless nights, squeaking toys, puppy teeth, and freezing walks around the neighborhood, but our hearts filled, too. Now we can't imagine our lives without our fur baby!
