(Portland to Deer Isle) The only way we travel to Deer Isle is via Route 1. If you aren't on a tight timeline, we highly recommend taking your time as you make your way along the coast! This article outlines some history, and some great stops to check out along the way.
(Stonington) Incredible food and incredible owners. One of our favorites spots ever.
(Stonington) Matt got spanked at chess here during our last visit.
(Stonington) So much more than delicious jams and jellies. A local artists has taken up residence and the property is filled with life-size sculptures (entire scenes and buildings) made from scrap and junk materials.
(Stonington) Take a ferry to Isle Au Haut and explore for the day. We have never done this before, but plan to on this trip!
(Bar Harbor) Only have a day? Check out Ocean Path trail that runs along the coast for an easy, and beautiful hike. Have a little more time? Try to catch a sunrise at Cadillac Mountain, or visit Jordan Pond for a walk around the lake followed by popovers in the cafe.
(Bar Harbor) Cute brekie spot in Bar Harbor (and our go-to after a sunrise at Cadillac Mountain).
(Bar Harbor) Possibly our favorite camping spot of all time - and the first time we learned about the importance of proper rain fly tension to avoid a 2am rainy wake up. If you are extending your trip, not afraid of the cold, and looking for some time outdoors - we highly recommend staying here. This is the closest area to Acadia National park to camp that is not actually in the park. A few things to note are that reservations require a minimum two night stay, and the campground closes on October 13th for the season.
(Bar Harbor) Our favorite lobster pound - and Brittany's favorite pre-marathon meal to date. Its a bit of a drive from Bar Harbor, but the location can't be beat.
(Bar Harbor) We stumbled on Thurston's Lobster Pound after our first visit to Bass Head Light. We recommend seeing the lighthouse and doing a late lunch/early dinner at Thurston's.
(Bar Harbor) One of our favorite dinner spots near Bar Harbor. Great food and a cute place with a fire pit outside on cool nights. We've heard they also have a coffee shop now!
(Portland) Sweet B&B with the best breakfast either of us have ever had. We stayed here after cancelling the second night of a not-so-sweet airbnb. Pretty sure Matt still dreams about the French Toast.
(Portland) Yummy oysters! We celebrated Matt's 30th here on our first trip to Maine.
(Portland)
(Portland) We kayaked with this group around Casco Bay and had a blast. Their season runs May - October.
(Portland) Potato donuts weren't really our thing - but alot of people are crazy about them. You'll have to let us know what you think.
(Phippsburg) A favorite of ours. The last time we visited the entire beach was briefly covered so densely in fog you couldn't see the shore line or the houses on either side of you.
(Rockland) Our favorite lighthouse in Maine (so far!) in one of our favorite towns. An easy stop off Route 1 with a perfect mile walk out to the end to stretch your legs.
(Rockland)
(Belfast) Friendly spot in a cute town. Great food. Along Route 1.
