Cash, Wechat pay, Alipay. Setup payments for both apps before you go. You can exchange your dollars for Chinese Yuan (RMB) at the airport. Your Credit Cards will not work for most things. Cash will not work for certain things so be sure to have app payments setup and cash on you. Also notify your bank before you go, Chase app said this is unnecessary but that's a lie, call and speak to a person about the dates you will be in China beforehand.
Uber is not in China, "Didi" is the app they use. Didi rides can be booked through Alipay, Wechat, or the Didi app (Chinese version), make sure to setup payment before you go.
The first wedding event is May 25th but we recommend you get to China at least 2 days ahead of time because of jet lag. It is a 12 hour time difference so give yourself as much time as you can to adjust so you can enjoy the wedding.
WeChat is like their Whatsapp, but it is also used for other things like paying and booking a Didi. We will create a group chat for the wedding to discuss updates. Download Wechat and add Taoran with this Wechat ID: SanyaMay2026
This depends on your phone plan, but you probably won't have a good connection. This matters because you will need a stable connection to buy things and for other services. It is HIGHLY recommended that you get either an eSIM or a local phone plan. Airalo and Holafly are two options for eSIMs, be sure that your phone is eSIM compatible and be sure to fully set up and install the eSIM before you arrive to China. This can be a little complicated so give yourself time to do it before you go and make sure to carefully follow all the steps the app gives you.
Many websites and apps we are used to are blocked in China. This includes Google services, Whatsapp, Instagram, Youtube, etc. The eSIMs get around the firewall and there are also VPNs for this.
China uses 220V outlets, you will need a good down convertor to protect things that use three prong connectors like blow dryers. Two prong connectors for things like phone chargers work normally and don't need convertors. This is a down convertor that we used in China: https://tinyurl.com/3kju6bh4
