How We Met

"Table Touch"

There is an ongoing debate on this origin story. As the manager of Hunter Gatherer (a former farm-to-table chain in Shanghai), Sherry had noticed Adam working alone in her stores. He's lonely, she assumed, even claiming that Adam uttered through his mouth-hole, "I'm lonely". Never one to ascribe to cliques and trite troupes, such as the wayward and recluse, forever-single ex-pat wandering Shanghai's streets, Adam rejects Sherry's sequence of events entirely. Rather, Adam claims, Sherry made "the first move," approaching him while he was focused on work, a reasonably solo affair. However, Sherry contends that she was simply performing "table touch," a hospitality technique designed to improve restaurant service quality, especially for recurring customers who seem lonely. Sherry then claims that the only reason she invited Adam on their first date is his alleged loneliness. Never one to turn down a date from a pretty lass, Adam accepted. They went to one of Shanghai's few jazz bars, Shake, where they danced into the night of an eternal promise. With many more dates in Shanghai and trips across China and the US, Sherry gradually realized that Adam indeed had many friends and colleagues. Why would he ever say that he's lonely? Did he really say it? Was he feigning loneliness? Or is Sherry adjusting the reality of these events for her own benefit? Who do you believe?
