Adam and Michaela met at Basic Combat Training in the summer of 2005 in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Adam was too afraid to talk to any "female soldiers" as he was not looking for any extra attention from the Drill Sergeants. Michaela sat just kitty corner to Adam in classroom formation (sitting in columns and rows with one tile to yourself). Well one afternoon while sitting in the formation, Michaela accidentally slipped what Adam recalls as the most thunderous of booty toots. Adam looked behind him in bewilderment to find that Michaela had put her head down in her knees and raised her hand to claim the noise as there was no blaming anyone else when you're sitting in such close proximity to each other. Well, that was all it took to break the ice (or tile shall I say) and they became the greatest of friends, keeping in touch over the phone and Facebook for over 6 years before meeting again. They have been inseparable ever since.
Most of you have seen the beautiful pictures of our trip to Colombia, South America this past November. What an amazing and humbling experience it was! The pictures you may have seen of the proposal have a bit of a story behind it and it goes like this: We decided to take a trek up the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Ciudad Perdida (the Lost City). Even though all we had were our backpacks to carry, we soon found out that I (Michaela) over packed! It took us 2 full days of crazy, mostly uphill terrain to get to the last camp, but we had the most beautiful scenery to look at on the way. On the 3rd day we took 1200 ancient steps up to Ciudad Perdida. I can't even begin to describe the beauty at the top of this mountain. It is such an amazing part of Native Colombian culture and history. Adam had me hand my phone off to our amazing translator to take a few pictures for us. I had turned around to look for a good place to take them. When I turned back around, there was Adam. He was down on 1 knee with a huge cheesy smile on his face. You might think my initial response was that of what was captured in those photos you might have seen on Facebook, but it was not. The first thing I said was, "Get up, Stupid!" as I hit his shoulder. I thought he was joking! Who would bring such an expensive piece of jewelry to a country that is a little sketch?! Well, apparently Adam. As soon as I saw there was a ring in his hand, I lost all control of my resting B face. I didn't get to wear it long that day, as I made him put it back in the safe place he smuggled it up the mountain in to smuggle it back down (I'll let you guess where that was, haha!). And here we are!
