Question

What is a Catholic Wedding? Is it different then a regular wedding ceremony?

Answer

A Roman Catholic wedding looks different than most weddings today. For many weddings, the focus of the entire ceremony is on the location, the vows, and the Bride and Groom. For a Catholic Wedding these facets are present, yet the focus is not on them, but on the gift of Jesus Christ who has made all these things, and brought all of us together. The wedding ceremony itself takes place in the setting of the Holy Mass in which we encounter our God and Creator and receive Him, in the gift of the Eucharist (only if you are a Catholic in good standing, see FAQ "Can I receive the Eucharist?" for further explanation) The Vows take place immediately after the Homily, and consist of multiple parts said by the Priest, Bride, and Groom. After, the vows, their is a receiving of the rings. The rings are blessed by the Priest, then the Groom places the ring on the Brides finger, and the Bride does likewise towards the Groom. After this occurs, the ceremony is not over, but the mass continues. The Church places the wedding in the middle of the Mass not to be a burden or to take away from the beauty of the day, but to show that unity between Bride and Groom is merely a small reflection of the unity in the Body of Christ (the Church).

Question

Can I receive the Eucharist?

Answer

See the guidelines set by the USCCB here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/guidelines-for-the-reception-of-communion

Question

Why is the altar rail being used instead of the Priest standing in the middle of the aisle?

Answer

At St. Mary of Mt. Virgin, there is an altar rail present which is not very common in most Churches today. The tradition of the alter rail dates back to the 5th century, and was first used as a physical barrier to protect the Priest during Religious persecution. Now it is used as opportunity for the faithful to receive the Eucharist with a reverent posture. Both Adam and Kate, have a profound love for the Eucharist, and desire for this posture to be practiced at our wedding as well. If for health reasons you cannot kneel to receive, please feel free to stand as close to the alter rail as possible and receive standing. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out :)
