We spent months admiring one another from across a playground. Haleryn pining from her classroom and Adam from the recess yard playing with Mo. Adam was braver, Haleryn was lucky.
Adam took me to Cliff Lake past Ennis to camp overnight. The sky to one direction was orange and bloody from wildfires but the other direction blue and lovely. The water was turquoise and clear and glassy. We loaded our paddle boards with gear and paddled to a campsite inaccessible by road. We did some wood chopping and camp set up and went back out on the water to explore. We saw 5 bald eagles and at least 2 golden, one at less than 10 feet away. We listened to the calls of sand hill cranes and a nest full of baby osprey screech. We chased a big white swan past an island at which we stopped and climbed. We were totally alone and the echoes around the lake were tremendous. We stopped and connected our boats and watched a soft snowfall of ash rain down into the lake. And in this perfectly perfect paradise, Adam asked me to marry him! Loving him is the best and most wonderful thing I've ever done.
