Medellin is generally safe for tourists. It is actually the safest it has ever been. In comparison with some US cities, Medellin is actually safer than Baltimore, Detroit and Chicago. One of the most famous sayings in Colombia is "no de papaya", something like "don't give papaya" in English. This just means don't let anyone scam you or take advantage of you. Some recommendations: - Be careful of your bags, and don't put your phone/wallet/cash in your back pockets. - Don't be "flashy" with your valuables. - Leave what you can at the hotel. - Don't go down dark, quiet, unlit streets late at night. - Trust your intuition. If it feels sketchy, it probably is.
The Colombian currency is COP (Colombian Peso). As of today 1 USD= $4,003 COP (See most up to date conversion here: https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=USD&To=COP). Although most establishments accept credit cards, we do recommend you bring some cash. There are currency exchange centers at the Jose Maria Cordova airport.
