Question

DO I NEED TO BRING MY CAR TO NANTUCKET?

Answer

We suggest not bringing a car. Most visitors find that they don't need a car on Nantucket and can get by with alternative transportation methods. However, if you prefer the flexibility of having your own vehicle, just be prepared for the additional cost and logistical considerations. Public Transportation: Nantucket has a free public bus system called the WAVE Nantucket Regional Transit Authority (NRTA) that can take you to various parts of the island for free. Download the TRANSLOC app to see all WAVE bus schedules & routes. There are also taxis and rideshare services available. Car Rentals: If you prefer the convenience of having your own vehicle, you can rent a car on the island. Ferry Considerations: If you decide to bring your car, you'll need to make reservations on the ferry that allows cars, such as the Steamship Authority. This option is more expensive and requires advance planning.

Question

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET TO NANTUCKET?

Answer

Nantucket is accessible by ferry or plane. Ferries run from several locations, including Hyannis, Harwich, and New Bedford. The Hy-Line Cruises and Steamship Authority are the two main ferry services. The trip from Hyannis usually takes about 1 hour, the trip from New Bedford takes 2 hours. Parking is available at the ferry ports to leave your car on the mainland. There are also flights available from major cities to Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK). Uber & Lyft are available on the island as well as a free bus shuttle. We recommend arranging your travel early to ensure a smooth journey.
