Our Love Story

Every love story has a beginning, and ours officially started on February 25, 2023. But what most people don’t know is that the story leading up to that day is just as special and a little bit funny, too. It all began in the summer of 2022, when my stepdad and Billy’s dad met through work. They quickly discovered they didn’t live far from each other, and before long, our parents became friends. Somewhere along the way, they decided that Billy and I simply had to meet. But I wasn’t so sure. At the time, Billy wasn’t 21 yet, and I wasn’t interested in meeting someone younger. So, for months, I politely refused. Then Billy turned 21, and fate stepped in. His parents invited my parents and I over to a crawfish boil, and after some convincing, I agreed to go. I told myself, “It’s a party, there’ll be plenty of people there. If I don’t like the guy, I can just mingle.” That confidence faded quickly when I found out it wasn’t a big party at all. It would just be Billy, his brothers, his parents, my parents, and I. I was absolutely terrified. Meanwhile, Billy was completely calm, maybe too calm. He actually forgot about the crawfish boil entirely and was out on a boat fishing with his cousin when his dad called to ask, “Where the heck are you?” just three hours before I was supposed to arrive. Let’s just say he might have driven a little over the speed limit to get home. Once he made it back, his dad insisted he get a haircut so he’d look nice for “the girl he was finally going to meet.” When it was time to head to the Branning house, my nerves were in full swing. I decided to take my own car, just in case, and even came up with a secret code word to text my best friend if I needed her to call with some fake emergency. But the second Billy opened the front door and our eyes met, every bit of nervousness melted away. It was as if everything in the world suddenly made sense. From that night on, we were inseparable. The only thing that could keep us apart was Billy’s job on the towboat, which took him away for 28 days at a time. Saying goodbye never got easier. Each time he left, my heart ached a little more. Then, a few months later, life gave us another beautiful twist; Billy was offered a shoreside job in Vicksburg. Without hesitation, we packed up and moved into our first apartment together, after just five months of knowing each other. Living together brought its share of adjustments, but we grew stronger with every challenge and learned what it truly means to build a life side by side. Now, on to my favorite part of our love story, the proposal. Billy and I had planned to go to Philadelphia, Mississippi, to stay at the hunting camp from November 6–12 (Thursday-Wednesday) for a little getaway. But plans changed when my best friend asked if I could go with her to get our nails done on that Friday, the 7th. To my surprise, Billy was completely supportive of the idea. Shortly after making those plans, Billy casually mentioned that he had booked a photographer to take fall pictures that Saturday morning. The moment he said it, I had a feeling something special was about to happen. When the morning of the photoshoot finally came, my mind was racing a mile a minute. We had done just a few poses when the photographer asked us to stand back-to-back for some shots. A moment later, I felt Billy let go of my hand and step away, and right then, I knew. When I turned around, he was down on one knee, and I couldn't help but cry. In that moment, every dream I’d ever had came true, and with that, the next chapter began in a love story that started with a nervous knock on a front door and a look that changed everything.
