Although we actually had a class together our first semester at Samford, we didn't really start to get to know each other until a series of wild off-campus connections brought us together. Months before we met, Abigail's close friend Ruth invited her to spend a weekend at her grandmother’s house along with her sister and her close friends. During this trip Abigail met Hannah, a friend of Ruth's sister, who lived in Birmingham and went to school at Jeff State, but enjoyed hanging out downtown. About a month later, Hannah invited Abigail to catch up with her at an event downtown. After they left the event, Abigail found her car had been towed. Now stranded, Hannah phoned her friends Gustavo and Alberto (Berto to those lucky enough to call him a friend). They swiftly picked up Abigail and Hannah and from there they made their way to Rojo, a Berto-favorite for food. Revelry and comedy ensued until the last call as they all went their separate ways. All the while, I had been volunteering at a bicycle shop in downtown Birmingham, which Berto just so happened to frequent and we had become close friends through the months. Then one evening as I was sitting down to dinner, Abigail asked if I knew Berto. I was confused and racked my brain for all the Bertos I knew, and realized there was only the one. We laughed and talked and went our separate ways that night. The weekend came around and Berto invited us both to a show. I rode up on my bike, took one look at her, and nothing has been the same since. We spent every waking moment together that first weekend. We climbed trees and abandoned buildings, played in the rain, and fell in love.
