Hugo and Abigail met at Breeze Bakery and Cafe in Annandale on August 23rd, 2018, as part of an off-campus outing for Northern Virginia Community College. It was Abigail's second day of college, and Hugo's second year. That weekend, they hung out again one on one, and though it felt like only thirty minutes had passed, they were surprised to realize it had been six hours of nonstop conversation and an instant connection. After a few more dates that they insisted were just "friends hanging out," it became clear that they were meant for each other. They officially became a couple on October 1st, 2018. The early years were marked by fun times, dressing up in coordinated Halloween costumes, beginning traditions of baking Christmas cookies together, watching TV shows and going to parks. They supported each other through college, both at NOVA and GMU, spending long hours studying on campus together. Through the years, they have been each other's rock, supporting and loving each other through school, the pandemic, family illnesses, loss, job changes and more. Abigail knew that Hugo was the one early in their relationship. One evening, as she said goodnight to him, she felt so at home in his arms. As she watched her home drive away, she realized that this would be forever and always, that she did not want to be without her home. Hugo admired Abigail’s thoughtfulness, and how she genuinely cared for him and others. She made it easy for him to be himself and he saw a light in her that he had never seen in anyone else. Being with her helped him see a future, a path, that he wanted to stay on, a life he wanted to share with her. They encouraged growth and challenged each other in ways that made them stronger. Now, nearly seven years later, they are so excited to take this next step in their life together.
