We met as Juniors in high school at Madison Central. We were polar opposites. Our first impression were nothing short of stereotypical. I thought he was a “redneck country kid” and he thought I was your typical “city brat.” Everyone in our ROTC class was trying to set us up knowing we liked each other but we continued to deny it until one day he told his friend he wanted to ask me out. We had many classes together and we were walking back and forth from our ROTC instructors classrooms and he stopped me, grabbed my hand and very awkwardly asked me to be his girlfriend and I was flushed and replied, “sure.” Since then it’s been history.
This was nothing short of a “Thomas moment” We were riding in the car and very spur of the moment he asked me “wanna get married?” and I said “sure.” He said okay wait a minute…. he pulled over beside the Clays Ferry Lookout and we got out of the truck and he proposed with a very short “script” that he had never before rehearsed, lol. Nobody knew it was happening and I was not prepared by with my outfit or hair. We stood there for a while and just laughed the whole time because never did I imagine my proposal being the way it was.
