How God Brought Us Together (unconventionally)

We’ve all heard of Tinder—the most notorious of the dating apps. Most people my age never think they’ll meet their husband on there… (Abby) One night, I was headed to hot yoga with a friend when I got a message from a guy who was oddly fascinated by my limited-edition JetBoil. (I didn’t even know it was cool—I just grabbed it from my grandpa’s garage.) After class, my friend and I were bored, and this stranger seemed funny, responded quickly, and was harmless enough (as far as strangers go), so I suggested we hang out. I told him to bring a friend over for a game night. (Morgan) I figured we’d go to a bar, but she changed the plan last minute to “games at my house.” Then she mentioned Wii, and I was in. I convinced my roommate to come, stayed in my work clothes—dress pants, button-down, dress shoes—and figured I’d at least look put together. (Abby) He showed up looking like he came straight from a business meeting and shook my hand when we met. Weird. I was in pajamas. The night was fun but nothing serious—I didn’t think much of it and barely texted him afterward. (Morgan) On the drive home I told my roommate, “She’s nice… but kind of weird.” About a month later, I was on a fishing trip with my uncle and thought it would be funny to text her a fish picture (since girls always joke about guys with fish pics). To my surprise, she was actually interested. No one had ever been that excited about my outdoor stories before. (Abby) Fast forward a month—I was in Hawaii eating breakfast when I got a text from an unsaved number: “Look where I’m at,” with a photo of a mountain view and a very large fish. It was Morgan. We started chatting again, and the conversation flowed so easily. When he asked me to come over for dinner the night I got back to Colorado, I said yes. Driving to his house, I told my friend on the phone, “I need to decide right now if I want to date this guy—because if I keep hanging out with him, I’m going to marry him.” Spoiler: I kept hanging out with him. (Morgan) One of our first real dates was fishing at the Dream Stream. Conditions were terrible—high water, bad weather—and I wasn’t expecting much. But Abby immediately started catching fish left and right. That day became one of my favorite memories. I usually practice catch and release, but that day, I decided to keep my greatest catch. That night, I asked her to be my girlfriend. That summer, we backpacked through the Flat Tops Wilderness, a place that’s now really special to us. Abby was not dressed appropriately (a pattern that continues), and she got absolutely destroyed by bugs. Most people would’ve called it quits, but she pushed through and laughed the whole way. She went out of her comfort zone to share in the things I love, and that meant the world to me. Somewhere on that trip, I realized I loved her. Since then, we’ve shared so many amazing memories—full of love, adventure, discipleship, laughter, and a few too many fish. We’ve grown together in our relationship and in our faith, and from early on, we both knew this was the plan God had for us. We are so excited to continue this journey through life as best friends, adventure buddies, and partners in everything. We can’t wait to celebrate the start of our forever with all of you at our wedding!
