Unlike typical "high school sweethearts," Hunter and I didn't actually go to school together. We met over 11 years ago in a local choir that both of our high school choir directors recommended us to audition for when we were 14 years old. I don't remember meeting Hunter officially, but he says he saw me at a rehearsal, and claimed he "had to make me his girlfriend," which he then tried to do via text on 12/12/12. I said no (lol) and exactly one week later we made it official (again, via text) on 12/18/12. We truly owe our relationship to the York County Honors Choir. After graduating high school, we did long distance for almost 5 years as we both went off to different colleges and Hunter continued on to graduate school. We finally moved in together in our Pittsburgh apartment in May 2022 and have loved starting our little family unit with our two cats, Fig & Wanda, and our dog, Brady. It's been so much fun playing house, but it was time for the next phase of our life to begin. Cue, the proposal... In September 2022, we went on a big family vacation to Disney World with Hunter's entire family for what I thought was a birthday trip for Hunter's brother. Everyone in my life who knew about this trip kept asking if this was the trip where the question would finally be popped, but I fully convinced myself an engagement was not on the table (yes, even after almost 10 years of dating). What's funny is that for many months leading up to the trip, I told everyone I was getting engaged the next time we went to Disney. We started the trip visiting my parents for a few days and had a very tearful goodbye, but looking back on it, my parents' tears were clearly for a different reason than mine. We then spent an amazing week with Hunter's family in Universal / Disney and finally, on our last day in Florida, I started getting suspicious when I could no longer track my parents and brother on Find My Friends (which I quite literally use as another daily social media app). We got to Epcot and met up with my good friend Marissa who worked there at the time doing the Disney College Program, and I let her in on my suspicions (keep in mind Marissa had NO clue this was happening). We went on with our morning and walked around Epcot while Hunter's parents "went to find us a brunch spot." I was getting antsy (#hangry) when Hunter finally got word that we had a "brunch reservation" coming up and to meet his parents by Italy (who had just met up with the photographers & my family). After walking over to Italy, Hunter grabbed my hand tighter than I've ever felt before and my heart sank to my butt. I knew it was time. He led me over to a bridge where we were going to take a "family photo" with Hunter's whole family (& Marissa). As we walked onto the bridge I asked Hunter if I needed to take my neck fan off, to which he said "yes." I then saw my mom, dad, and twin brother Steven walk around from behind a fountain across the bridge which made me realize my suspicions were correct, this was the moment I've been waiting for for a long time. I hugged my dad, then my brother, and then my mom, which probably took longer than Hunter was expecting because when I finally turned around he was already down on one knee waiting for me to see. Truthfully, I don't remember any of what he said, but I heard "Abby Lauren Astrachan, will you marry me?" and without a thought, I responded "No shit Sherlock!" Now, here we are, getting ready for our WEDDING! 14-year-old "Abby & Hunter" would be SO happy for 25-year-old "us". We're so excited to celebrate with all of you in 2024 and for our families to officially become family. XOXO, Abby & Hunter
