The Proposal

7/3/2025

On July 3rd, Abby had two things on her mind: mountains and material science. She and Dylan had taken a week off their internships to join Dylan’s family in Breckenridge, Colorado—but Abby’s summer materials science course didn’t take a vacation, and she had an exam scheduled for that afternoon. To add to the adventure, she also had a goal to summit a 14er on this trip, and the morning of the 3rd marked the perfect opportunity to scratch this off the bucket list. They were staying just 15 minutes from Quandary Peak, which was very tempting for Abby. At 14,271 feet with a 6 hour round-trip trek, it is not exactly the ideal pre-exam activity but she was stubborn and excited! While Dylan tried to subtly steer Abby toward a more relaxing morning, she—completely unaware—nearly derailed her own proposal by insisting on a big adventure. His family also joined in on the effort, doing their best to convince Abby that this hike could wait a day. However, with the weather looming, it was now or never. So on the morning of July 3rd, with limited time and a big goal, Dylan and Abby caught a 4:30 am shuttle, began on the trail in the dark, and scaled what felt like 3 hours of stairs. They made it to the summit—very out of breath—by 8:15 a.m. After soaking in the stunning views (for all of 10 minutes), they raced back down the mountain to make it to the condo in time for Abby’s 1 pm exam. It is an adventure they are convinced was completely worth it. Later that day, once Abby finished her exam, Dylan convinced her to go for one more walk, this time around a peaceful lake at the base of Quandary. There, with the mountains behind them, Dylan asked the most important question of his life. And the best part? She said yes. The second best part? Abby’s parents and siblings, being in on the plan for over five months, traveled to Colorado to surprise her and celebrate the moment. Both families confused other hikers as they hid in the bushes near the beginning of the trail. The weekend that followed was filled with so many joyful memories. Dylan and Abby are so thankful they got to celebrate such a special moment with both of their families. It seems so fitting that their life as an engaged couple was kicked off with such an adventure packed day!
