A Love Written in the Stars

Abby and Austins' stars first crossed in the spring of 2018, when they were both juniors at the University of Georgia. They met inside the Science Library, where study sessions and chance encounters soon grew into an easy friendship. Quick lunches between classes, walks around campus, and late night study sessions brought them closer. There were so many small but special moments that deepened their connection — like Abby sharing her favorite hidden treasure on campus, a small turtle pond near the library. Or stepping outside into the crisp Athens air after a late-night study session together, looking up to the sky as Abby pointed out the constellations she was learning about in her astronomy class. One of those nights, she showed Austin her favorite star, Betelgeuse, a red supergiant glowing bright orange within her favorite constellation, Orion. After they both graduated from UGA in December of 2019 and left Athens behind, Abby and Austin stayed in touch through long text and FaceTime conversations. That spring, Austin visited for Abby's birthday and surprised her with two gifts tied to her love of the stars: a necklace of the Orion constellation and a painting he made of a wolf howling at the moon, Betelgeuse glowing bright among the surrounding starry sky. The following month, on May 29th, 2020, Austin asked Abby to be his girlfriend. Fast-forward five years later, Austin took Abby back to Athens on their anniversary weekend to revisit the places that shaped their story— their favorite restaurants, the Science Library where they first met, and their hidden oasis by the turtle pond. Surrounded by fairy lights and with Abby's blue telescope set up beside them, they shared a picnic that felt both familiar and new. They spent the evening looking through the telescope at the crescent moon, with all of the songs that held a special meaning to their relationship playing in the background. When Abby wasn't looking, Austin quietly switched out the eyepiece of the telescope so that when she next looked through it, instead of the moon and stars, Abby found the words "Will you marry me?" shining back at her instead. On June 26, 2026, beneath the glowing stars of the South Carolina State Museum Planetarium and surrounded by loved ones, Austin and Abby will promise forever to one another— a love written in the stars.
