How We Met

First comes low-sodium turkey, then comes marriage.

Abbie first spotted Jordan at their local grocery store while shopping for a Sunday dinner her friend was hosting. She glanced at him a few times, thinking to herself how cute he was, and what a shame it is that she probably would never see him again. A few minutes later, Abbie found herself standing at the deli counter right next to Jordan. The deli counter clerk asked, "Will the low-sodium turkey be all for you, sir?" Jordan mumbled, "Yep, thanks." Abbie had ordered regular turkey, and without thinking blurted out, "Maybe I should be getting low-sodium turkey too!" Jordan just looked at her, gave a little smile and nod, and walked away. That night at Sunday dinner, Abbie's friend decided it would be fun to create a Hinge dating app profile for her. He wanted to see what the dating app experience was like from a girl's perspective. He wrote a bunch of silly answers to the prompts, one of them stating that Abbie is "really good at NFL parlays". A few days later, he asked Abbie to send him screenshots of funny responses only to that prompt. Out of the (many) responses Abbie received, she happened to screenshot Jordan's. Abbie's friend immediately responded, "Don't you know Jordan Grollman? He went to Indiana University with us and is friends with so many of our friends!" Abbie, thinking Jordan's face looked familiar, quickly texted back, "Oh! That makes sense. I thought I recognized him!" Abbie's friend sent Jordan Abbie's phone number. By the next day, their first date was already on the calendar! Abbie still doesn't really know what an NFL parlay is.

Our First Date

01/17/19

Jordan walked across Dearborn Street to pick Abbie up for their first date. Literally, a whole 15 steps from his apartment to hers. Abbie knew she recognized him right away, but couldn't figure out where from. She chalked it up to seeing him around at school a few times, given that they had so many mutual friends from IU and had probably been in the same room before. On the way to Pour House, a local bar, Abbie noticed Jordan had his coat unzipped. An unzipped coat? In the middle of Chicago winter?! Abbie reached over and pulled the zipper up, "Keep your coat zipped, you're going to get sick!" Jordan quickly zipped his coat up the rest of the way and chuckled. He already knew they were going to be a perfect match. They sat at Pour House for hours just talking. They talked about their families, their likes and dislikes and of course played a classic game of Jewish Geography. The patient waitress came over and asked for probably the 5th time, "Any interest in ordering a drink?" They laughed and got a couple drinks, realizing they'd been talking for two whole hours without even ordering anything. As they got up to leave after a round of drinks, it clicked. With a big smile on her face, Abbie exclaimed, "Were you at the grocery store getting low-sodium turkey last Sunday?" Jordan immediately knew what she was talking about, "No way. That was you?!" The rest is history.

The Proposal

07/03/21

Jordan and Abbie's entire relationship had taken place in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago. Jordan knew that Somerset, a gorgeous restaurant right around the corner from their apartment, was the perfect location to pop the question. Trying to keep Abbie off the engagement scent, Jordan told her that he was coordinating a brunch with a group of their friends to celebrate 4th of July weekend. On Saturday the 3rd of July, the couple walked over to Somerset to "meet their friends" for brunch. Abbie thought this might be the moment, but when they walked in Jordan gave the name of their friend as the name on the reservation. Abbie was deflated. The hostess led them up the stairs towards the second floor dining area, which was oddly empty. Instead of walking towards the tables, though, the hostess opened the door to a private room. There were candles laid out on the floor making a pathway to large, light up letters spelling out "MARRY ME?" Abbie was in complete shock as Jordan got down on one knee and asked, "Will you marry me?" (Well… that's really the only part I heard. I still don't know what he said because I was freaking out, but I'm sure it was beautiful. Anyway, back to the story!) Abbie shouted, "YES! Of course I'll marry you!" After they took some celebratory photos and had a few rounds of champagne, Somerset treated the couple to a delicious brunch on their own floor of the restaurant. "I can't believe you even had the reservation in a friend's name!" Abbie laughed. Jordan smiled and said, "After all this time, I know you always notice the little details. I wasn't going to let you catch me on a technicality!" We can't wait to share the little, and big, details of the rest of our lives with all of you!
