About the Ranch/Rescue
Abbie's mom, Laurie Higgins-Kerley, founded Dove Creek Equine Rescue in 2012 - and the story started with loss. In 2008, Laurie lost her husband Bob, Abbie's dad, to cancer. In the months that followed, she found solace on her ranch near Canyon, Texas, where the horses seemed to sense her grief, drawing close and offering quiet companionship. That empathy became the foundation for Dove Creek.
Laurie founded the rescue to help unwanted horses - animals no longer needed or cared for - find rehabilitation and a dignified second chance.
She was later joined by her husband Greg, and together they grew Dove Creek into an accredited nonprofit recognized by the Homes for Horses Coalition and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.
In 2017, Laurie launched Led By Horses, an Equine-Assisted Coaching program inspired by her own healing. Today, Dove Creek serves both horses and humans - a place where every act of rescue creates a ripple of hope.
