Abbey and Cole met during move-in weekend their 3rd year of college at Saginaw Valley State University. Cole was helping Abbey's roommate at the time, Abigail, move-in to Abbey's and Abigail's dorm room. He messed up Abbey's bed after she had spent 6 hours organizing and putting her things away! Abbey and Cole got along but never spent time together until the end of the 2018 fall semester during winter break. Abbey told her parents she was going back to Saginaw for the weekend to hang out with friends, when really it was just Cole! Cole wouldn't sit on the same piece of furniture as Abbey or hold her hand until 3 months of talking turned into them officially and FINALLY dating on February 6th, 2019. Between then and the proposal, their lives involved many late nights ordering Papa Johns on campus and eating it in Abbey's dorm room, drinking around the bonfire at Cole's parents house while they were away on the weekends, deciding which family to go to and when for holidays, graduating from college, lunch dates to Blossoms in Bay City, moving into an apartment together, swimming everyday at their apartment's pool when the AC was broken in their third floor unit, purchasing vehicles, impulse buying pet fish and a tank, getting adult jobs, doordashing dinner when they were both too tired to do anything else, and buying a house. On March 5th, 2022, Cole popped the question at Laurel Falls in Gatlinburg, Tennessee while they were on Abbey's spring break from her master's program. Abbey wasn't paying attention and was wading through the creek with Cole following when he got down on one knee and their best friends, Abigail and Clayton, told Abbey to turn around! Cole had told Abbey many times before, "When I ask you to marry me, I'm only going to ask one time." Lucky for him, Abbey said YES in the middle of him asking then proceeded to bombard him with questions asking if he asked her parents and his if it was okay with them. Strangers hiking Laurel Falls took pictures and laughed as Abbey had a panic attack from the happiness and Cole hugged her tight.
