One of the most fascinating aspects of life is that the smallest of moments procure the greatest of impacts. Our lives, radically changed overnight. The infinite degree of complexity that aligned perfectly to allow you that moment – think about that. That, is the reason I cherish the moment our eyes met. The accuracy of that single moment in time could not be overstated. I admit the lunacy of this, but it was the moment I knew. I have asked myself countless times, “How?” I typed “great places to work” into Google after being accepted to a college four states from home, and Starbucks was at the top. Five years I worked there. Rushing into college on guesses of what I wanted to do in life lead to four major changes and a fifth year. No commitments, returning to Virginia, admittedly a bit lost. Abbey started college on a music scholarship at the same time I started my fifth year. Intelligent, talented, and beautiful. She kept to her faith in God, attending church every night she could. The transition from home was more challenging for her, but she took comfort in the routine of getting coffee with her dad after church on Wednesday nights. The Starbucks closest to her church that night was undergoing renovations and was closed. That detour brought her to my store. When she came in, I was captivated. I took her order, misspelled her name three times, shared light small talk, and she left. I let her walk away knowing I shouldn’t have. My saving grace was that I gave her free coffee – it brought her back the next week. It just so happened our Greek organizations had a social the following Thursday. The day before the social, we planned to see each other again. I would be working, and she wanted more free coffee. Despite being late to that shift, her mistaking one of my best friends as me, and not having her number yet, I was brave enough to find her on social media and reach out. Somehow, it worked. We found each other at the event and began dating shortly after. The past four and a half years have been the most wonderful, blessing-filled years of our lives. Years, not without challenge, but with ever-present love and commitment. Years, not without sacrifice, but with dedication and cooperation. It is beyond understanding how God orchestrated the crossing of our paths, yet we know this was ultimately His work. The love we have for one another is divine at its core, the highest of the Lord’s blessings. No matter what lies ahead, one thing Abbey and I have always known: we were made for each other.
