The Old Post Office originally opened in 1921, but underwent a monumental expansion in 1932 to meet Chicago's postal needs. In its postal heyday, the 2.5 million square foot property was the largest of its kind in the world, capable of processing 19 million pieces of mail daily. In the 1960’s automated postal systems were introduced, and by 1996 a new Chicago post office was completed to accommodate this technology. Sadly, The Old Post Office closed its doors with its future remaining uncertain. After sitting vacant for over two decades, The Old Post Office saw new light. The building underwent the largest historic redevelopment in the country and its doors re-opened in 2019. Today the building is home to numerous corporate offices. Fun Fact: The Historic Lobby is featured in the opening scene of The Dark Knight.
