Aaron and Alana met on Bumble, both having swiped right because the other had listed the author Cheryl Strayed as their dream dinner guest. Cheryl Strayed isn't exactly a household name, so it was surprising to see it reflected in another's profile, and very telling regarding the connection that was to come. For those of you who don't know, Cheryl Strayed wrote her memoir "Wild" and more importantly (in our opinion) she was at one point the writer for the Dear Sugar advice column. Her writing is raw, compassionate, honest, and visceral. Alana was convinced that any man who knew enough about this writer to list her as his ideal dinner guest would have a depth, empathy, and appreciation for beautiful writing that she had yet to meet in a straight man. Aaron, on the other hand, had actually had dinner with Cheryl Strayed at an event in college and was dying to tell someone about it. After a couple weeks of (increasingly lengthly) messaging, Aaron finally worked up the courage to ask Alana out for coffee. They met at Johnson Public House in Madison, WI, then went for a walk to James Madison Park, where they will be getting married four years later. On the walk, Alana asked way too many personal questions, which Aaron answered fully and with a stunning vocabulary. After the date, Aaron sent Alana the spoken word poem "Asking Too Much" by Andrea Gibson, and Alana fell in love a little. Their second date was a week later, and after that, they both knew (wonderfully, terrifyingly) that they might have just found their person. And the journey began.
