Our story began in the most unexpected way, but looking back now, we know it was completely led by God from the very beginning. At the time, Aaliyah was deeply focused on school, volunteering, and serving through nonprofit work connected to education and social impact. As a social work major on the pre-law pathway, she spent most of her time within leadership, involvement, volunteering, and preparing for finals. Meanwhile, Oscar had just finished a long basketball season and decided to take a break and run a quick errand to buy an Apple case for his iPad. What seemed like an ordinary day quickly became the moment God would use to change both of their lives forever. While Aaliyah was volunteering, Oscar noticed her from across the street. After briefly speaking to one of Aaliyah’s best friends and roommates at the time, he walked over and introduced himself. Focused on her work, Aaliyah honestly did not want distractions unless someone was interested in supporting the initiative she was working on. But there was something different about Oscar… his calm spirit and kindness immediately stood out. After asking a few questions, Oscar asked Aaliyah, “Are you from Utah?” She smiled and said yes before asking him the same question. He laughed and explained that he was not from Utah but was there for business, while Aaliyah explained she was there for school. He also asked are you Mormon?” She laughed and said no. As the conversation came to an end, Oscar politely asked if he could have her Instagram and phone number. Aaliyah glanced at the cross around his neck, looked back at him, and decided to give him her instagram and phone number. What Aaliyah did not know at the time was that after receiving her number, Oscar spent time praying about whether he should even text her. He asked God for wisdom, direction, and peace about this woman he had just met but could not stop thinking about. About a week later, Oscar finally reached out while she was in finals and busy schedules. Conversations started slowly. Oscar preferred calling and kept mentioning FaceTime, while Aaliyah had gone home to visit family. Eventually, they agreed to a quick FaceTime Bible study together, and from that moment, everything began to feel different. Soon after, Oscar asked Aaliyah out to dinner. He asked her what her favorite food was and where she would like to go. He picked her favorite restaurant. He picked her up in his truck with country music and Michael Jackson playing, instantly making her smile and wonder, “Who is this guy?” He opened every door, treated her with genuine kindness, prayed over their food before they ate, and the two ended up talking for four hours until the restaurant closed. What started as one dinner quickly became a friendship rooted in faith, laughter, prayer, and love. Just one month later, Aaliyah became his girlfriend, and ever since then, they have been best friends. As their relationship grew, so did their certainty that God had brought them together intentionally. Through every season, prayer, and milestone, they continued choosing each other while keeping Christ at the center of their relationship. Then came the moment they would remember forever. During a beautiful trip to Hawaii, Oscar surprised Aaliyah with the most breathtaking proposal surrounded by elegant all-white flowers. In one of the most beautiful moments of their lives, he got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. And just as God had placed peace in both of their hearts from the very beginning, Aaliyah said yes to forever.
