Founded in 1905 by Ben Schrader and a group of local tavern owners and grocers, the original Falls City was formed to fight a big beer takeover in Louisville. In 1906, Otto Doerr was hired as our first brew master and our beer soon began appearing in local taverns. Shortly thereafter, a bottling plant was added and Falls City became one of the most popular breweries in Louisville, KY. The Falls City Beer Taproom in the NuLu neighborhood recently underwent transformation as PARLOUR steps in for a collaborative restaurant venture. The partnership highlights the shared commitment to quality and community between Falls City Beer and PARLOUR. Falls City Beer has been a popular choice at PARLOUR restaurants, and this venture represents a natural progression of the successful relationship between the two establishments.

- Catering: $4,555 (average for 100 guests)
- Florists: $4,441
- Bar services: $3,644
This means your venue choice leaves plenty of room for exceptional food, flowers, and beverages that will define your celebration.

Yes—Downtown and nearby neighborhoods like NuLu have become wedding hotspots. NuLu in particular is known for its creative, walkable atmosphere with art galleries, breweries, and eclectic venues that work beautifully for smaller celebrations.

Outside catering policies vary significantly among Louisville venues, so this is a critical question to ask during your venue walkthrough. Some small venues, particularly those in NuLu, the Highlands, and Butchertown, are more flexible with outside vendors and may allow you to bring your own caterer—though they often require the caterer to carry liability insurance.
Others have exclusive catering agreements or require you to use their in-house kitchen and staff. Even if outside catering is allowed, venues typically impose minimum spend requirements or kitchen rental fees to cover facility use.
Before falling in love with a venue, request their catering policy in writing. Ask specifically about kitchen access (prep space, refrigeration, cooking equipment), whether your caterer needs insurance, and if there's a per-head fee or flat kitchen charge. Louisville's warm, humid summers make reliable refrigeration and ventilation essential, so clarify these logistics early. Comparing these details upfront prevents costly surprises and ensures your chosen caterer—whether in-house or external—can deliver the food experience you envision.
Policies vary widely depending on the venue. Many small venues offer flexible catering options, allowing you to bring an outside caterer or your own alcohol (BYOB), while others require you to use their preferred vendors or in-house catering.
Here's what to clarify when you're comparing small venues:
- Ask about BYOB policies—some venues permit outside alcohol with a corkage fee, while others prohibit it entirely
- Inquire whether you can hire your own caterer or if the venue requires their preferred partner
- Understand any minimum spend requirements, which typically range from $2,000–$8,000, according to the Zola Wedding Cost Index across small venues on the market
- Check if catering minimums are separate from or included in the venue rental fee
Small venues tend to be more flexible than large ones since they have fewer vendors to manage. However, some smaller spaces—especially restaurants or bars—may have stricter policies to protect their service standards. Always request these details in writing before booking to avoid surprises closer to your date.
We recommend booking your Louisville venue 12–18 months in advance, especially if you're planning a wedding during peak season (May through October). Louisville's most popular venues fill quickly during these months, and you'll have significantly more options if you secure your space early.
If you're planning a winter or early spring wedding, you may have more flexibility and could book 6–9 months ahead. Once you've locked in your venue, you can confidently plan the rest of your celebration—catering, photography, and florals typically follow. Starting your search now gives you time to compare options and negotiate, rather than settling for limited availability at the last minute.
Louisville's wedding venues are scattered across distinctive neighborhoods, each with its own character:
- NuLu (pronounced "New Louisville") is trendy and urban, perfect for modern, artistic celebrations with exposed brick and industrial-chic backdrops.
- The Highlands offer tree-lined streets, upscale venues, and a vibrant restaurant and bar scene nearby for rehearsal dinners and guest entertainment.
- Crescent Hill provides a charming, historic residential feel with elegant estates and classic architecture ideal for traditional celebrations.
- Butchertown combines emerging urban cool with warehouse-style spaces and craft brewery vibes for creative couples.
- The Waterfront along the Ohio River delivers scenic views and outdoor ceremony options with Louisville's natural beauty as your backdrop.
Each neighborhood has its own personality—choose based on your wedding style and guest experience priorities.
