On Saturday, you’ll travel to Girón for the wedding Mass at the main colonial church in the town square. Mass will be in Spanish mostly with readings in English. During the Exchange of Peace, guests may shake hands or hug. Communion is for confirmed Catholics only. Attire: Formal or semi-formal; bring a light jacket and shoes for cobblestone streets. After the Mass, we’ll pause for group and family photos in Girón, between the church and the reception hall, surrounded by cobblestone streets, the park, and familiar corners of my childhood. Guests are welcome to join or relax in the plaza while photos are taken. Afterwards, we’ll head to the reception hall. Tip: Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket — the walk is short, but the mountain breeze can be cool. Family vacation to the Galapagos

Our favorite vacations are the kind that bring together the people we love most, giving us all a chance to relax and make memories together. Instead of a traditional honeymoon, we’re inviting anyone who’d like to join us on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to the Galápagos Islands! The Galápagos is a living museum of natural history where sea lions nap on beaches, penguins swim beside tropical fish, and giant tortoises roam freely. These islands inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and remain a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for their beauty, wildlife, and sustainable fishing traditions. We estimate the trip will be around an additional $1,000 per person for five days and hope to secure a group discount so more loved ones can join us on this unforgettable experience.

✈️ Arrival & Travel
Guayaquil holds the biggest airport in Ecuador but the closest airport to our wedding is Cuenca (CUE). If you don’t speak Spanish or prefer a simpler travel experience, we recommend flying to Cuenca at Mariscal la Mar International Airport. It’ll be easier to navigate and provides the smoothest connection to Girón. If you’re arriving late in the week. Please do NOT take a flight to Quito! Quito is about 12 hours away from Girón, and you may miss the wedding if you don’t have a connecting flight.

Here’s a general guide for those who’d like to venture out on their own: Cuenca: There are plenty of Airbnb’s in Cuenca along with buses and taxis that will bring you to Giron. Perfect for guests who’d like to explore Ecuador’s most charming colonial city before or after the wedding. Cuenca offers the widest variety of accommodations, from boutique hotels to affordable and stylish Airbnbs. The city is walkable, full of cafes, local markets, and museums, and only about 45-60 minutes from Girón. Staying here is ideal if you’d like to enjoy city comforts and cultural sights while still being close enough for a quick drive to the ceremony. Girón: Best for guests who prefer to stay near the ceremony and reception. Quaint inns and guesthouses are available within walking distance. However, Airbnb choices are limited in my small hometown so booking early or considering nearby options is recommended Yunguilla Valley/Santa Isabel: Ideal for those who’d like a warm, relaxing overnight surrounded by palm trees and mountain views. Shuttle service will be provided between Yunguilla and Girón. Yunguilla/Santa Isabel has the warmest weather of all choices and most rentals in the area have pools. We suggest not going further than Cuenca or Santa Isabel for at least the wedding weekend. Ecuador is a beautiful country and worth staying extra days to explore further 😉

Answer
People in Girón greet everyone with a smile, and a friendly greeting, or a nod when making eye contact. They may say “Buenos Dias/Tardes/Noches” depending on the time of day. Feel free to return the greeting. If you speak Spanish and engage someone in a conversation, small conversations are common and may last longer than you’re used to, but this is simply friendliness, not flirtation.

What are the people of Giron like
Answer
Most people in town know each other well, often by their family’s last name. Locals can usually tell who is visiting from out of town and may ask questions about you or your family’s last name. While in Giron you are part of my maternal family and that is “Garzon-Sanchez”. If you get lost or need help you can ask for “Rodrigo Garzón”, “Jhody Garzón” or “Hermel Garzon” they’re my grandpa and uncles. Locals know them and will guide you. If in any case someone does not know them or you’ve ventured further than Giron just ask for the “Hospital de Giron.” My family lives less than a block away and my uncle works in there. TLDR: If you get lost remember the last names of La Familia Garzon-Sanchez, Garzon-Ordoñes, Garzon-Quezada or the “Hospital (pronounced Os-pee-thal) de Giron”

Do I need to rent a car in Ecuador?
Answer
Not necessarily! Many guests prefer using taxis, private drivers, or Cabify/Uber (available in larger cities like Guayaquil or Quito). Driving in Ecuador can be different from what you’re used to. Expect winding mountain roads, with unexpected one road lanes, occasional (common) potholes, and defensive driving. Most cars in Ecuador are manual transmission, if you need automatic please ensure they know you need automatic. Carry cash on you, stick to daytime travel outside the city/town, drive cautiously, don’t get offended if someone passes you and give them the right of way.
