Okay, so full disclosure: I had never said yes to a setup before. I always figured they were doomed – awkward, forced, and mostly for the friend's benefit who wanted a cute story. So when my friend Amelia asked if I was willing to be set up, I was already mentally drafting my polite refusal. But then she sent me a picture of Dolly. The picture was from a Christmas card she'd taken with her roommates, and the first thing that hit me was her smile. People tell me I have a big smile, but seeing hers? I knew right away she had me beat. By a mile. So, somewhat begrudgingly, I broke my own rule and said yes. My brilliant plan was to arrange a quick happy hour at The Eastern. Meet at 5:30, have one drink each, make some small talk, and execute a tactical retreat by 6:30 so I could get home for dinner and an Office episode. Solid, efficient, foolproof. Or so I thought. What I didn't know at the time was that I was actually date number two of three Dolly had lined up back-to-back that week! Seriously. Let the record show: Dolly is an absolute catch with plenty of options, and the fact that she chose me still kind of blows my mind. Anyway, back to our date. My 5:30-to-6:30 plan completely evaporated. We started talking, and it was just... easy. The conversation flowed so naturally that 6:30 came and went without either of us noticing. Then 7:30. Then 8:30. We were actually still there, talking away, when The Eastern finally closed at 10:00 PM. We hadn't even ordered food – The waiter even came over at one point and gently suggested that sustenance might be required if we wanted to stay, but we were so wrapped up in conversation, we just kind of... ignored him? Fueled by conversation alone, I walked her home. I was feeling great about how well it went, but also incredibly nervous because, let's be honest, she was beautiful and way cooler than my awkward self. So, when we got to her door, I gave her a hug and, in a moment of panicked inspiration, delivered the ultra-smooth line: "Maybe I will call you sometime." Nailed it... I can only imagine she went inside wondering what on earth that meant. Thankfully, despite my less-than-stellar closing, I did manage to reach out again. That first date led to a second, then a third, then ten, then fifty... and now, somehow, that girl with the amazing smile is my fiancé! Dolly, you're the greatest light, you constantly show me grace and Jesus's character, and you still have the better smile (I've accepted it). I honestly cannot wait to make you forever Young
