Tomas and Mia first met in October of 2019 when Mia joined the Lester Spanish congregation in Fayetteville, Georgia. Mia recalls, "I was always his secret admirer. Although he was shy, he was always early for meetings, greeted everyone he saw, and was willing to help in any way there was a need. Ironically, Tomas never knew that Mia paid attention to those details and thought so highly of him! He tells us, "Mia is always so nice to everyone she meets, so how would anyone know if she thought of them in a special way?" Needless to say, it took a few years for a romance to start, and a global pandemic didn't help at all. Although they lived only 20 minutes apart from each other, from March 2020 onward for two years, Tomas and Mia only crossed paths via Zoom for social events. Thankfully, around summertime of 2022 the effects of the pandemic were steadily subsiding. In-person social events were once again becoming "a thing". During that period, Tomas and Mia found themselves constantly at the same events and little by little started to get to know each other on a deeper level. Close friends noticed that there was a potential spark between the two, but fear of ruining their newly-developed friendship prevented both Tomas and Mia from making the next move. These feelings persisted for months. One day, Mia decided to invite Tomas and other close friends to attend an Atlanta United soccer game. She says, "It was my last attempt to see if our relationship could progress to something more. I knew he loved soccer, so I thought it would be the perfect outing to get him to express any deeper feelings (that is, if he had any)." Well, the day of the soccer game came and went. Mia adds, "It was a fun day, but it seemed like Tomas only saw me as a friend. I accepted that and told myself to appreciate what our friendship already was." What did Tomas have to say about that day? He tells us, "This was the day that my interest in Mia skyrocketed! We talked about sports a lot, enjoyed great food and drinks, and she hit it off with one of my best friends that she had never met before. I always knew she was a smart person and a good friend, but after that I saw her cool and down-to-earth side like never before." What would happen being that Tomas' interest just peaked and Mia has given up hope on their potential romance? Believe it or not, Tomas noticed that Mia had seemed to pull away emotionally from their friendship. He realized that it was his last chance to make a move. How would he do it? Tomas says, "After much thought and consideration, I decided to invite her to run a marathon with me. I know most of you might laugh and think that nothing sounds special or romantic about that, but I knew Mia. I knew that she loves to exercise, so I would have a lower chance of her turning me down if I invited her to do something that she really likes." Mia adds, "His invitation to run a marathon caught me way off guard. I asked him who else was going to do it and he said that I was the first person that he asked, hahaa. I started to suspect something after that." From that day forward, Tomas made a special effort to keep in close contact with Mia, sending her messages every day and making sure that she was training for the marathon. (What a good excuse to text her every day, right?) Tomas concludes, "I am so thankful that Mia didn't give up on me and she welcomed my attempts to get closer to her. I knew that I did not want to pass up the opportunity to make her my girlfriend, so on August 1st of 2023 I officially asked her to be mines." Life got very busy for Tomas and Mia after August 1st, so they never ended up running the marathon, hahaa. Let's just say that Tomas used the right bait for this one.

Tomas y Mia se conocieron por primera vez en octubre de 2019 cuando Mia se unió a la congregación de Lester Spanish en Fayetteville, Georgia. Mia cuenta: “Desde un principio lo admiraba de lejos. Aunque Tomás era tímido, siempre llegaba temprano a las reuniones, saludaba a todos y estaba dispuesto a ayudar en cualquier forma que fuera necesario.” Irónicamente, Tomas nunca supo que Mia se fijaba en esos detalles y lo admiraba. Él nos dice: “Mia siempre es muy amable con todos. Entonces, ¿cómo podría alguien saber si ella pensaba en él de una manera especial?” No hace falta decir que se tardaron unos años antes de comenzara un romance, y la pandemia global de COVID 19 contribuyó a la demora. Aunque Tomás no vivió muy lejos de Mia, durante la pandemia solo se encontraron en eventos sociales de Zoom. Por fin, en 2022 los eventos sociales volvieron a celebrarse en persona. En estos eventos, Tomas y Mia se encontraron constantemente, y poco a poco empezaron a conocerse más. Los amigos cercanos notaron que había una chispa entre los dos, pero durante meses el miedo de que se arruinara su nueva amistad impidió que Tomas y Mia dieran el siguiente paso. Un día, Mía decidió invitar a Tomás y a otros amigos cercanos a un partido de fútbol del Atlanta United. Ella dice: “Fue mi último intento de ver si nuestra relación podía crecer. Sabía que a él le encantaba el fútbol, así que pensé que el partido sería la ocasión perfecta para lograr que él se expresara.” Bueno, el día del partido de fútbol llegó; y se fue. Mia añade: “Fue un día divertido, pero pareció que Tomás sólo me veía como una amiga. Acepté eso y me dije que debiera apreciar lo que ya era nuestra amistad.” ¿Qué dice Tomás sobre ese día? Nos cuenta: “¡Ese día mi interés en Mia se disparó! Hablamos mucho sobre los deportes, disfrutamos de excelentes comidas y bebidas, y ella se llevó bien con uno de mis mejores amigos que nunca había conocido antes. Siempre supe que era una persona inteligente y una buena amiga, pero después del partido, vi su lado tranquilo y práctico como nunca antes.” Ahora que se había despierto un vivo interés en Mia, ¿por fin se empezaría el noviazgo? Pero Tomás se preocupaba. Tomás notó que Mia con mucho tacto parecía alejarse emocionalmente de su amistad. Parecía que Mia ya no quería profundizar la amistad. Tomás se dio cuenta de que sólo le quedaba una última oportunidad de avivar su interés. ¿Cómo lo haría? Tomas dice: “Después de pensar mucho y considerarlo, decidí invitarla a correr un maratón conmigo. Sé que la mayoría de ustedes se reirán y pensarán que no parece nada especial o romántico en eso, pero conocía a Mia. Sabía que le encanta hacer el ejercicio, así que habría menos posibilidades de que ella me rechazara la invitación a hacer algo que realmente le gustaba.” Mia añade: “Su invitación a correr un maratón me tomó por sorpresa. Le pregunté quién más iba a hacerlo y me dijo que yo era la primera persona que había invitado. ¡Jaja! Empecé a sospechar en ese momento que quería profundizar nuestra amistad.” A partir de ese día, Tomás hizo un esfuerzo especial por mantenerse en comunicación con Mía, enviándole mensajes todos los días y asegurándose de que estuviera entrenando para el maratón. (Que buena excusa para enviarle mensajes de texto todos los días, ¿verdad?) Tomás concluye: “Doy las gracias que Mia no se rindió y aceptó mis esfuerzos para acercarme a ella. Yo sabía que yo no quería perder la oportunidad de convertirla en mi novia. Así que el 1 de agosto de 2023 le pregunté si pudiéramos ser novios. Ella dijo que sí.” A partir del 1 de agosto de 2023, la vida se volvió muy ocupada para Tomas y Mia. Así que sus planes de correr el maratón nunca se realizaron. Pero obviamente Tomas fue muy astuto en avivar el interés de Mia y en profundizar su amistad.

Most of you might know that Tomas and Mia began dating on August 1st, 2023. Tomas proposed to Mia just days before celebrating their one year anniversary of being together. When considering dates for their future wedding, they were ecstatic to see that six months after August 1st falls on a Saturday. Therefore, they were convinced that February 1st, 2025 would be the perfect wedding date for them. Some may worry about harsh winter weather in February, but Tomas and Mia are confident that their celebrated love will be beautiful in any season.
