Funny enough, we met through Tinder. While we were planning our first date, I mentioned that I was open to go anywhere for dinner as long as there was a meatless option. Derek replied, "That works out because I don't eat meat either." We settled on going to The Cheesecake Factory together. We quickly realized how much we had in common. We bonded over our shared heartache over Brickroad Pizza closing during COVID, and laughed about how we both had cats and dogs. (Though we didn’t quite think that part through. Fast forward to moving in together, and suddenly, we had two dogs and three cats under one roof.) At one point during dinner, Derek asked me what I was looking for in a partner. Over the years, I had kept a list. What started as a long, detailed checklist of little things eventually narrowed down to 15 qualities that truly mattered. I had never shared it with anyone before, but something about Derek made me feel comfortable enough to show him. When he read it, his immediate response was, "I think I can do that." That date ended with Derek asking if he could kiss me, and the rest is history.
