Welcome to Our Love Story

It was April 2022. Neither of us was particularly enjoying online dating, but we both held out hope that something wonderful might still be waiting. One lucky day, on Facebook Dating, Suzanne accepted a match request from a handsome man with kind blue eyes. His entire dating profile simply read: “The sun is shining. The weather is sweet.” Suzanne had spent hours thoughtfully crafting her own profile, so naturally, she was a little skeptical. A few days later, with a nudge from a no-nonsense friend, Suzanne turned a corner and spotted Rob waiting outside Kupros, their first meeting place. The moment he looked at her, she felt a deep, undeniable knowing, and thought, “Oh f$#k.” She hadn’t expected to feel that. Rob looked at her and thought, “Damn, she looks good.” And so they talked. Rob was, indeed, a man of few words, but they were words that carried warmth, kindness, and a quiet steadiness. Suzanne loved what she heard. Rob appreciated her straightforwardness and, as he later put it, her ability to somehow look 20 years younger than anyone else her age. True to form, Rob kept it simple - Suzanne, meanwhile, was having a bit of an existential moment. From the very beginning, the connection felt easy. As we spent time together in the weeks that followed, it became clear that this was something special. Even Rob had an existential moment of his own, telling Suzanne he felt like he was falling off a cliff and hoped she was falling too. We started building something beautiful: a relationship grounded in kindness, friendship, shared values, and a deep commitment to growing together. In August 2023, we backpacked to Spider Lake, a hidden mountain gem just beyond Desolation Wilderness, reachable only on foot. Just the two of us, Koa the dog, and a shimmering lake surrounded by mountains. In that peaceful, magical place, Rob asked the question. Suzanne said yes. Our engagement has been filled with laughter, love, and plenty of life’s beautiful chaos: blending families, juggling work and school, traveling the world with kids, buying and remodeling a multigenerational home (if you know, you know), all while nurturing a love that continues to deepen with each passing day. A little over three years later, Suzanne still gets lost in those blue eyes. Rob still keeps things simple. And together, we continue to cherish a connection that remains easy and keeps growing sweeter. We can’t wait to celebrate this next chapter with all of you! We’ll be tying the knot in the backyard of our new home, surrounded by the people (and the pup) we love most, and we’re so excited to share the joy with you.

Reverend Matt

Officiant

Reverend Matt Hamasaki was born and raised in Berkeley, California where he grew up attending the Berkeley Buddhist Temple. It was there that his interest in Buddhism began and was fostered by the Sunday school teachers who entertained his smarty pants questions and energetic behavior. In high school, he deepened his connection by attending conferences through the Jr Young Buddhist Association. These gatherings taught him Buddhist lessons and he networked relationships under the guise of having fun and dances. It was at one of these conferences where he decided to pursue the ministry. He continued his education getting a bachelor’s in Religious Studies at UC Davis and his masters in Buddhism from the Institute of Buddhist Studies. Rev Matt received tokudo ordination in 2012 and kyoshi certification in 2015 after which he was assigned to the Central California District. In 2018 he was reassigned to the Buddhist Church of Sacramento. When he’s not busy with family or work, he enjoys watching sports, cooking, and playing video games. He also likes working out but does not do that as much as he should. Rev Matt is self-diagnosed autistic with ADHD. His interests are varied and intense for short periods of time.
