The Engagement

Adventure in Onida County Forest Preserve

Ryan and I have spent many long weekends and vacations visiting the vast forests and lakes of Rhinelander Wisconsin and the surrounding areas throughout our relationship. This is a very special place for us, as we lovingly refer to Ryan's family cabin as the Supeter Sanctuary. We have celebrated our dating anniversary there for all three years we've known each other. But this year was extra special. At the end of January, Ryan took me on an adventure to experience again the exhilaration of driving the ranger through the beautiful forest preserve when the snow was high and freshly fallen. The twists and turns in this secluded area are enough to enjoy the day fully. But he asked if we could stop at the bridge we found the first time we traveled these roads, to spend some time taking photos and seeing the creek peek through and under the ice, bubbling and quietly moving along. We pulled over on the side of the trail and walked together to the middle of the bridge and took in the fresh air as I took out my camera to start capturing the moments. But he turned to me and took a knee, and asked me to marry him. I was surprised even though I knew it was what we wanted and discussed many times before. My heart warmed in the cold air. When I said yes, he kissed me and we took a moment to take this photo so we could share the news. Then we went on a small trek through the deep snow into the forest along the creek. Taking in all the details and leaving fresh tracks, we found evidence of someone else who had enjoyed the fresh snow. There were otter tracks bounding around in circles and flipping and sliding down the hill and into a small hole in the ice. It was wonderful to see something so rare and happy on our celebratory walk. After exploring further, we continued our drive on the soft white trails of snow and shared the news with our family. The slowness of Northern Wisconsin, even when driving fast, is so relaxing and peaceful. This is what we love and what we celebrate, and that is why we want to join in ceremony together in this place, sharing these adventures with the people we love. Thank you for taking the time to consider experiencing these wonders with us.
