Q & A

Please review the following information so everyone can have a great time on the big day! If you have any other questions that aren’t answered below, please reach out to jozwiaksophia@gmail.com.
Question

Wait, aren’t you already married?

Answer

Yes! We eloped in Austin, TX in September 2023 while we were still settling in to new jobs and new cities. It was an intimate and lovely ceremony, and now we’re ready to celebrate our marriage with friends and family. We appreciate your patience and are so excited to see you all!

Question

What are your pronouns?

Answer

Thanks for asking! Sophia’s pronouns are she/her/hers (for example, “She is very excited to celebrate her marriage to Robin.”) and Robin’s pronouns are they/them/theirs (for example, “They are very in love with their wife, Sophia.”). If you have questions about gender-neutral pronouns, Sophia would be happy to send you some resources. Thank you for respecting who we are — on our special day, and every day!

Question

Where is the celebration?

Answer

Heights Brewing in Farmington, MI. We’ve watched Shawn and Ryan Kavanagh (Sophia’s aunt and uncle) turn this dream into a reality over the past 3+ years, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have our special day here. So many of our special moments have happened in Downtown Farmington, it only felt right for this one to be here too. Not to mention, the food is better than Austin BBQ (and we’ve had a lot of Austin BBQ), and everything Ryan brews is delicious. We highly recommend checking them out when we’re not shutting them down for a wedding!

Question

Is there an open bar?

Answer

Yes! Heights Brewing offers a range of beers, ciders and seltzers, all made in-house. They also have a mind-blowing root beer for our NA guests.

Question

I have a food allergy, can I make a special request?

Answer

The entire food menu is gluten free and nut free, with gluten free beverages available. For more information, please contact Heights Brewing on Facebook.

Question

Is there parking for the celebration?

Answer

Yes! Heights Brewing has a large shared parking lot behind the restaurant. There is also street parking throughout Downtown Farmington and several other free parking lots within walking distance.

Question

Is there a dress code?

Answer

Semi-formal/brewery-chic. Think cocktail dresses, suits or whatever fits your style. The celebration will be inside Heights Brewing, but we’ll be elevating the space with romantic decor for our big day.

Question

Are young children welcome?

Answer

Respectfully, no. The celebration will take place in a brewery with limited space and no changing rooms for the littlest ones. We appreciate your understanding.

Question

Are you registered? Where?

Answer

Since we’re traveling out of state for the wedding, we’ve opted for a honeypot in lieu of physical gifts. Thank you for contributing to our celebration!

Question

When should I R S V P by?

Answer

Please let us know your plans by Saturday, August 3.

Question

Can I bring a date?

Answer

If that is indicated on your invite, yes! If that is not indicated on your invite, no! We’ve taken care to invite the family and friends closest to us and cannot accommodate extra guests in this intimate space.

Question

Do you have any hotel recommendations?

Answer

We have reserved a block of rooms at Courtyard Detroit-Farmington Hills. Please use the link in the “Travel” section below to reserve your room at a discounted rate by August 20. There are also two other nearby hotels off Farmington Road and I-696 (a Residence Inn and a Holiday Inn), though we can’t guarantee availability there. All three of these hotels are 3 miles away from the wedding venue (about an 8 minute drive).

Things To Do

We both grew up in metro Detroit, so we’re excited to share some of our favorite places with you!

Buddy’s Pizza

31646 Northwestern Hwy, Farmington Hills, MI 48334

For the Houstonians who don’t believe Detroit Style Pizza is a real thing: Come back to us once you’ve had an Anipasto salad and a Detroit Public TV.

Farmington Civic Theater

33332 Grand River Avenue, Farmington, MI 48336

Catch a movie at the historic Farmington Civic Theater, just steps away from our wedding venue. Sophia has performed there nearly every summer since high school.

Farmington Farmers Market

33113 Grand River Ave, Farmington, MI 48336

Stop by the Farmington Farmers Market the morning before our wedding for fresh produce, delicious baked goods and live music! September 21 is also the Harvest Moon Festival, so there will likely be some special surprises in store that morning. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is another venue Sophia has frequented throughout her musical career.

Leo’s Coney Island

33292 West 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48334

Our favorite diner in town, featuring coney dogs, chicken finger pitas and saganaki (cheese on fire! What more could you want?)

Jersey Bagel Deli & Grill

33220 West 14 Mile Road, West Bloomfield Township, MI 48322

Best bagels in town. Don't forget the schmear.

Detroit Institute of Arts

5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202

A must-see if this is your first time in Detroit, featuring original works by Diego Rivera, Vincent van Gogh and more. See if you can spot the WDET transmitter from the front steps!

Our Story

We met at Michigan State University in 2017, and started dating in 2018 after Robin wooed Sophia with rice cooker spaghetti and an appreciation for Taylor Swift. We’ve since settled down together in Houston, TX where Robin works as a software engineer at Johnson Space Center and Sophia works remotely as a social media manager at Detroit’s NPR Station, WDET. In our free time, we enjoy long walks with our 5-year-old pup Juno, testing out new recipes and practicing whatever craft we’re into this month. On December 30, 2022, Robin surprised Sophia with a trip to Austin to celebrate New Year’s Eve. As we were getting ready for a night out, Robin invited Sophia to the balcony to see the city lights as the sun went down. While she was distracted by someone watching “Avatar” (2009) on the roof of some parking garage, Robin got down on one knee, said a bunch of nice stuff neither of us can remember, and then asked her to marry them. She said yes.
The night we started dating (East Lansing, 2018)
Our first trip together (Chicago, 2018)
Our first anniversary (2019)
The summer Robin graduated from MSU (East Lansing, 2022)
