James and Kate first met during freshman year while getting to know other students on their dorm floor at Calvin University in August 2017. After going out with friends to an all-night coffee shop, they exchanged phone numbers. They spent September hanging out and studying together. At the end of the month, James asked Kate to be his girlfriend. They've been together ever since. James proposed during their senior year, on April 3, 2021.
