How The Couple Met

Spring Semester 2014

Their eyes first met in the Spring of 2014 in the atrium of the LSU Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) in New Orleans, LA. Allison had been there for a few months, enrolled in the accelerated nursing program, while Julius had recently began his studies toward a master’s degree in occupational therapy. Each of them was in a relationship that obviously didn't work out. And whew!!! Thank God that it didn't!!! Allison and Julius saw each other often in that atrium, as they studied there frequently, she with her good friend, Sarah Kelly, and he with his classmates. They became cordial associates in this atrium, having casual conversation, sharing about home and family backgrounds, eventually learning that he and her father share the same birthday and he, her brother, and her father are members of the same fraternity, ΑΦΑ. On April 9, 2015, the two of them exchanged phone numbers and they began exchanging text messages the next afternoon...and, well, the rest is history…well, her story, his story, and somewhere between them is the actual story. See, Allison was going to graduate in two months, and both of them were uncertain about the ending/destination/goal of whatever it was they were starting. Allison had a strong fondness for Julius and knew she wanted to give them a chance, but she wasn’t sure how to go about that with her moving away so soon. Julius had a special thing for Allison, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to enter a long distance relationship with someone he had just recently began getting to know. However, the two had become enamored in one another, and over the next six months of phone calls, text messages, & Skype-ing, they fell in love. The next year, in May 2016, Julius completed his master’s program, then returned to Chicago where he spent his final month as a resident of the Windy City. On June 28, 2016, he and Allison loaded his car with all of his possessions and began a journey from Chicago to Los Angeles to start their lives together.

The Day She Said "YES!!!"

April 14, 2018

Allison had gotten antsy, you know, keeping her nails done, her hair laid, hoping that Julius would ask the question. He had planned several excursions for them to do every weekend, but after many fun date nights, Allison decided to enjoy that she had a man willing to take the time to plan amazing weekend activities. This particular Saturday, he told her that they were going to the Getty Center, then out for date night, so he’d asked her to wear something especially nice that day. They cooked brunch together that morning & watched television until it was time to depart for the museum. Before they left for the museum, he slipped the slim ring box into his sock while she wasn’t looking. Later, he moved the ring to his inside blazer pocket following a made up story about him needing to use the bathroom at the museum just before they began walking down to the Central Garden. The day was sunny and clear, which made everything at the museum all the more picturesque. The architecture of the Getty Center and the 360-degree views of Los Angeles were absolutely stunning. And the art there was cool too. Once they arrived at the front of the Garden, it happened…through nervous lips, Julius said to Allison, “I forgot we didn’t celebrate the anniversary of the day you gave me your number…but, I hope that after today we’ll have another anniversary to celebrate”. Then he knelt to one knee and asked her to be his wife, and she said "YES!!!" As she cried happy tears, Allison heard the clicking of a camera and figured some nice person had decided to capture the moment for them. What she didn’t know is that Julius had arranged for his coworker to photograph the occasion and it was his camera that she’d heard. After a warm embrace, Julius slid the ring on her fourth finger, then turned Allison around and pointed to a balcony area where both their families from Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta had come to witness the special day.
